Sudbury.com loves when we receive submissions of poetry. Recently, Sudbury writer Tara-Lee Lecours shared a poem with us, a cute little bit of verse about a cut little encounter with an alien visitor, Meteor Mason, who loves ice cream and, apparently, puns.

Meteor Mason

Something rather extraordinary happened to me today, a dynamic little character came strolling right my way.

He was short, with thin arms, a cute-looking fellow,

Shiny eyes like cooled slag, his skin, comet-yellow.

Three long fingers wrapped around a cone made of waffle, dripping in ice cream, he made a mess, something awful. As he licked and enjoyed the treat dotted with the chips, the smokestack of scoops, soon began to tip.

I decided I’d stop, not just pass him by,

to offer an extra napkin to this being from the sky.

I told him where I’m from, and after telling him my name, he flashed a cool smile, then proudly shared the same.

'Meteor Mason' explained that he’d come from Outer Space sent with a giant meteor to explore this very place.

I probed as to whereabouts his home was in the stars

He told me it was the red planet that humans call Mars.

He explained that his home was light-years away

but that he liked it so much here, he'd decided just to stay. That he adored the centre of science, and the doughnuts and their holes, Stompin' Tom, watching hockey, and the arena with its goals.

That there's just so much to do,

with all of the lakes and rocks and trails,

whether roasting marshmallows by campfires,

or on the boardwalk watching sails.

That he fancies the big coin, the shiniest of nickels,

and going to a pub for a plate of deep-fried pickles.

I asked him "Of it all, what's been your greatest impact, Mr. Mason?”

That's when he grinned and simply said, "The Sudbury Basin.”
