A popular Christmas Day event has been cancelled this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Organizer Michael Vagnini, the city councillor for Ward 2, said it’s “just too risky” to run the No One Eats Alone dinner this year.

“Even the health unit suggests that we don’t do anything,” he said.

The event, which would have been in its sixth year in 2020, allows people to eat Christmas dinner in a communal setting Dec. 25. Last year’s event, held at the Northbury Hotel, attracted more than 300 people.

A statement issued by another one of the event’s organizers, Tom Price, thanked the Northbury Hotel for giving organizers assistance in trying to make the dinner happen this year, although in the end, it was cancelled.

The organizers say they look forward to Dec. 25, 2021, when hopefully the event can resume.

Vagnini said he wants to wish “everybody the best Christmas possible under the circumstances.”
