Remembering Poppy: Sudbury's Justine Giles releases new single

Song a tribute to her late miner grandfather

Singer-songwriter Justine Giles recently released a new single in memory of her Poppy (grandfather) Ivan Giles.

Ivan passed away last April at the age of 67. He was well known in Sudbury's Inco community, working in the mines for several years.

Though Justine has been residing in Toronto pursuing her career, her Sudbury roots certainly shine through in this new song with lyrics that read “In the old days he moved away from the tides, spent his working days down deep in the mines, but he never could find anything like what was in his heart, in his soul, shone a light of you and I as bright as gold.”

The song “Poppy” was mastered by Grammy-nominated engineer João Carvalho and produced by Bill Bell (also a Sudbury native residing in Toronto) who has worked with the likes of Jason Mraz and Tom Cochrane.

Justine and Bell have created two singles previous to “Poppy” which have been met with the support of CBC Radio One, acquiring national radio play. Justine plans to debut this new single on Radio One as well.

The singer-songwriter held a tribute concert in honour of her grandfather this past Friday evening.
