The Sudbury Symphony Orchestra is pleased to announce that, effectively immediately, Robert Lemay, the multi-award winner and internationally known Sudbury composer, will serve as the new composer-in-residence for the SSO.

Lemay is the first person to hold the position of composer-in-residence with the Sudbury Symphony Orchestra. The Ontario Arts Council funded this program.

Lemay will be playing an active role in the SSO organization and the City of Greater Sudbury community.  He will compose a soloist violin concerto for the SSO concertmaster, Christian Robinson, to be premiered during the 2009-2010 season.

Lemay will also select Canadian repertoires in collaboration with the concertmaster and the music director of the SSO, Maestro Victor Sawa.  Several workshops and community outreach activities are being planned for the Composer-in-Residence. Lemay will also introduce guest composers to the Sudbury community.

The composer has received many commissions to write music for renowned musicians throughout the world.  His music has been performed in Canada, the United States, Japan, Europe (France, Denmark, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Czech Republic, Hungary, Slovenia, Spain and Belgium), and in South America (Argentina, Brazil and Venezuela).

Among his recent honours is the second prize from the Prix Luxembourg 2007, the second prize from the Kazimierz Serocki 10th International Composers' Competition 2006, an international orchestra contest organized by the Polish Society for Contemporary Music and the Polish Radio Orchestra.

Other international prizes include first prize from the 2004 Harelbeke Muziekstad Wind Ensemble Competition in Belgium for his piece, Ramallah, crafted for saxophone alto and wind ensemble.  Some of Lemay's music is published by the notable publishers, Éditions Jobert and Éditions Fuzeau, in France.

The Sudbury Symphony Orchestra is a not-for-profit organization established in 1975. It provides educational and teaching programs within the community and is comprised of over 50 musicians.

The SSO is a member of the Association of Canadian Orchestras, and is a licensed member of the Society of Composers, Authors and Music Publishers of Canada (SOCAN).
