Santa turns on the Festival of Lights

Thousands of lights make up about 150 displays at Science North

With Sunday night's frigid temperatures setting the perfect backdrop, the annual Festival of Lights, organized by the The Sudbury Charities Foundation, is now lit up for all to enjoy.

Santa Claus made his yearly trip in on a firetruck to officially kick off the festival. He handed out candy canes and posed for photos with those in attendance before making his way back to the North Pole.

“This is our 26th Festival of Lights,” said Dustin Bradley, chair, Festival of Lights. “We did things a bit differently this year. We rented the IMAX theatre to show the movie 'Elf,' we had some pizza, and we played games. That all led to the arrival of Santa, who came to flip the switch and turn on all the lights.”

The Festival of Lights runs every night from 5-11 p.m. until Jan. 7. There are roughly 140 to 150 light displays for people to enjoy.

“It's really nice to see the kids' faces light up when they see them,” Bradley said.
