Get your Christmas on with the Sudbury Symphony and the SSO String Quartet and Friends for the second installment of its chamber music series, Dec. 18.
The “friends” in question are the dancers from the Dance Connection Studio. Three young dancers will interpret some of the famous tunes from the Christmas favourite “Nutcracker.”
“There are so many ways to interpret these famous melodies and so many arrangements of this wonderful music by Pyotr Tchaikovsky,” the SSO said in a news release. “On this occasion you will see the string quartet very hard at work getting all of the luscious harmonies and intricate rhythms that go together to create the well-known images.”
The event takes place starting at 2 p.m. at Place des Arts. The café at Place des Arts will be open before and after the performance for those who want to raise a glass before the show or raise a glass to the quartet after the show.
SSO also announced that it will be offering for sale a Seasonal Symphony Package just in time for holiday gift giving. The package gets you a copy of Page 1 of the original jazz composition written especially for the SSO by Sudbury’s Christian Overton, along with a pair of tickets to the concert where it will have its world premiere, "Jazz on the Rocks", in May 2023.
“This limited edition package will be on sale at the concert. It's a one-of-a-kind gift of a musical experience as well as a way of supporting the arts and your community.”
The SSO String Quartet will offer a free preview concert at the main branch of the Greater Sudbury Public Library, on Dec. 17 at 10:15 a.m. in collaboration with Dundurn Press author Jeremy John, with stories from his book "Robert's Hill (or the time I pooped my snowsuit) and other Christmas stories.”
