Staff Tries: HQ Trivia the live game show you play on your phone

Beginning of the end for traditional television game shows

Gone are the days of sending in an application or auditioning to appear on your favourite TV game show. Now, anyone can be a contestant thanks to a trendy new app called HQ Trivia.

HQ Trivia is a live game show you play on your phone for a chance to win cash prizes. Picture "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire" only without the commercial breaks, the contestant's drab life story and minus the three lifelines.

To win, you have to get 12 questions correct, which are all multiple choice. Sounds easy, right? Maybe not.

You have only 10 seconds to answer each question and if you get it wrong - you're out. (Tip: Click here to find out how to get extra lives.)

The game goes by fast, about 15 minutes from start to finish. There's no time for bathroom breaks or time to Google the answer.

Whoever is still standing at the end splits the jackpot, which is deposited through PayPal. If no one wins, that money goes towards the next game.

The jackpot ranges from $2,500 to $18,000 USD. So, depending on how many of your fellow HQties win, you could earn a buck or the entire pot - either way, it's easy money!

More than 2 million people logged onto the app on Super Bowl Sunday to compete for a piece of a $20,000 prize, which took place during halftime. Only 168 people made it to the end - earning nearly $120 each. That's not a bad chunk of change, considering most of them were probably playing while lounging on the couch.

Currently, there are no commercials or pop-up ads, which leaves many wondering how they make money. A rep for HQ Trivia told Money that the company is backed by venture capital and is not currently focused on profitability. Investors are betting the game will get big enough that, eventually, companies will pay to be associated with it.

Wanna try it out for yourself? The HQ Trivia app is available for download on both Apple and Android devices.

Tune in to the live game every day at 9 p.m. and weekdays at 3 p.m.
