Staff Tries: Playing the trombone with one of The Smokers (video)

Watch our managing editor attempt to skank with trombone player Blair McNally

From the mid to late 1990s, The Smokers — known for their hybrid of ska and swing with splashes of rocksteady and R&B — was arguably the most popular band in Sudbury.

According to Sudbury.com managing editor Mark Gentili, The Smokers were the best band to come out of Northern Ontario in the late 1990s.

So when Long & McQuade invited us to a lesson with The Smokers trombone player, Blair McNally, Gentili was excited to skank with the best of them.

Watch the video above as McNally tries to teach Gentili some basic trombone skills.

The Smokers will reunite on stage at the kickoff to the 2017 Elgin Street Craft Beer Fest at 9 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 11.

Tickets are available online through Event Brite or at the door.
