For the fifth year running, Sudbury Indie Cinema will hold a celebration of National Canadian Film Day tonight (April 17).

An open house takes place from 4-6 p.m., followed by a screening of Anthropocene: The Human Epoch at 6:30 p.m. and Chien de Garde at 8:30 p.m.

The event takes place at Sudbury Indie Cinema's new theatre, located at 162 Mackenzie St., having repurposed the gymnasium of the former Ecole Saint Louis De Gonzague. The theatre only opened two months ago.

Proceeds from the screenings help support Indie Cinema in their programming of Canadian films, including locally produced films.

"If we want Canadian culture, in all its diversity to thrive, we must be proactive in seeking out and supporting our storytellers,” said Beth Mairs, Sudbury Indie Cinema’s executive director and lead programmer. “National Canadian Film Day is a great opportunity to see the staggeringly great work our artists are producing in both documentary and fiction.”

Tickets cost $15 per screening or $25 for a double bill through Event Brite. At the door, tickets cost $20 per screening or $30 for a double bill.
