Sudbury Symphony Orchestra returns to the stage this fall for a couple of limited-ticketed performances after having its season cut short last spring due to the pandemic.

The SSO String Quartet performs two shows at Sudbury Indie Cinema Saturday, Oct. 24.

The matinee performance will be at 2:30 p.m., and will be followed by an evening performance at 7:30 p.m. Limited tickets will be available at a cost of $45, and are for sale to the public as of Monday, Oct. 5 at 9 a.m. through the website Eventbrite.

The SSO String Quartet is comprised of Beth Schneider Gould (Principal 1st Violin), Melissa Schaak (Principal 2nd Violin), Geoff McCausland (Viola), and Dobrochna Zubek (Principal Cello), and they will be presenting a program that consists of Shostakovich’s String Quartet No. 8 and Tchaikovsky’s String Quartet No. 1, which includes the much beloved second movement, said to have brought Leo Tolstoy to tears.

The program is roughly one hour long and will be presented without intermission.

“We have been looking forward to this moment since March, and we adapted ourselves to the public health guidelines to offer you this concert in collaboration with our precious production partner Indie Cinema,” said SSO artistic director Mélanie Léonard, in a press release.

Sudbury Indie Cinema, which is located at 162 Mackenzie St. in Sudbury, reopened in August and worked with other cinemas and public health to put in place best practices to keep movie-lovers, and now classical music enthusiasts, safe.

The cinema has put in place measures to maintain social distancing, implemented a mask requirement, and has hand sanitizer available to patrons (among other measures). To ensure the safety of everyone, ticket sales are limited to 40 seats per concert.

Sudbury Symphony Orchestra is looking forward to sharing this return and beautiful moment in music with audiences.
