Imagine Cinemas' Downtown Movie Lounge will open its doors to the citizens of Greater Sudbury on May 19 with two new releases, including the Warner Bros. movie The Nice Guys and the Universal Studios movie Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising.

Imagine Cinemas is an independent but growing theatre chain based in Windsor.

The Sudbury cinema is its sixth theatre location. The group operates theatres in Windsor, Timmins, Leamington and Kitchener, as well as in Whistler, BC.

After extensive renovations, the group is reopening the theatre space in the Rainbow Centre Mall. The location may be the same, but the concept is entirely new said general manager Gina Facca, in a press release.

Theatre sizes will range from 41 seats to 130 seats, which will also add to the upscale movie going experience.

The theatre will be scaled down in terms of number of seats, but will definitely be cutting edge with everything else. The movie experience will be like nothing else available in Northern Ontario, the press release said.

The theatre will house just over 360 luxury VIP reclining Zero Gravity seats in its six auditoriums as well as full Dolby ATMOS 7.1 sound in every theatre.

Currently, there are only 245 screens in the world equipped with state of the art Dolby ATMOS. This location will be the first cinema in the world to have Dolby Atmos in every theatre, said Facca.

ATMOS is cutting-edge technology in the area of sound. ATMOS movies allow the patron to feel more immersed in the movie than ever before, with sound coming from 360 degrees. It is not only about sound quantity, but sound quality.

In addition to the sound and the seats, the cinema is equipped with digital projection and the largest screens the theatre space would allow, which will again add to the movie experience.

This location will also be seeking a liquor license to go along with the upscale VIP vibe.

The purpose of this concept is to bring folks back to the theatre from the comfort of their living rooms.

The theatre is also a “perfect venue” for corporate or special events, the press release said.

Tickets (including reserved seats) will be available online on the theatre's website at www.imaginecinemas.com starting May 13.

Tickets are also available at the ticket kiosk in the mall and of course at the theatre.

Prices will be $12 for adults, $8 for seniors and children under 14. A matinee price (all movies starting before 6 p.m.) will be $8 and Tuesday will be $6 for all seats.

Free parking is available evenings and weekends in the Rainbow parking structure with a movie ticket receipt.
