Local community theatre group Theatre Cambrian, which has been struggling with financial problems of late, has issued a statement on the recent resignation of its president, Chris Nash.

Nash told Sudbury.com this week that she's stepping down because the troupe's financial situation is so bad, she doesn't feel the organization can survive. She also said she thinks Theatre Cambrian is in such poor financial shape that she doesn't think city council should offer it the bailout package it's requesting.

But in a statement issued Thursday morning, the theatre company said the position that Dr. Nash has taken does not reflect the will of the board.

“This should not impact the decision that will be coming to Council,” the statement reads.

“On June 5, 2018, Dr. Nash and I both met with representatives from the City of Greater Sudbury Arts and Culture Department to begin writing the report that will be presented to council on July 10, 2018.”

It goes on to say that Theatre Cambrian has experienced many ups and downs in its 33-year history, but its current board, led by interim president Derek Young, “is committed to continuing to make sound financial decisions based on our resources and capacity to produce shows that will be responsive to our patrons, so that Theatre Cambrian can be returned to its glory days as a viable community theatre company.

“Through community partnerships, sound fact-based decision-making, volunteerism, a better patron experience, and civic engagement as demonstrated with the recent production of 'Oliver,' we know that TC can and will be financially sustainable with a strong community theatre model.

“Thank you to our entire theatre community for your ongoing support, which is greatly appreciated. #honesty #optimism #findthepassion #thenextact.”
