This weekend's downtown beer fest: here's what you need to know

Read below for a list of beer companies and bands you can check out

If you're attending the fifth annual Elgin Street Craft Beer Festival this weekend, here's what you need to know.

The event starts Friday night with a street concert prequel performance by The Smokers, who were one of Sudbury's most beloved bands.

This hybrid of Ska and Swing with splashes of Rocksteady and R&B was a mainstay in Sudbury bars and festivals for five years. Josh Fuhrman, Matt Foy, Bryan McNally and Blair McNally created a great catalog of music, releasing one treasured album. The band had recorded a second album but moved on to other projects before releasing it.

The Smokers hit the outdoor stage at 9 p.m. Friday.

The beer fest itself takes place from noon to midnight Saturday.

The festival closes down one lane of traffic along Elgin Street and the adjacent Grey Street to create a single licensed area for 1,800 people under a special occasion permit.

This event is a premium beverage event that is open to all over the age of 19 to sample the finest in craft and imported beer available to Ontario.

There will also be games and prizes. Children under 12 accompanied by parents are permitted, but unaccompanied teenagers are not permitted.

With admission, you'll receive a sample glass that can hold one or two samples, with branded printing on the side.

Tickets are $25 + tax for the beer festival, $15 + tax for the Friday night Concert. Weekend passes are $35 + tax — advance prices only.

Door prices will be $20 Friday night concert and $30 for Saturday Craft Beer Festival, including tax.
