Nora Ephron and her sister Delia, the famed Hollywood screen writers, aren't just funny. They're gifted at taking us to unexpected places.

“Love, Loss and What I Wore,” by Nora and Delia Ephron and based on the best-selling book by Ilene Beckerman, peels back the layers on growing from childhood to womanhood in North America.

Kids are forgiven juvenile pranks like eating dog biscuits on a city bus or yelling from a second story window at unsuspecting men, “Hey, do you know you're going bald?” What childhood doesn't have these little gems?

The cast of five local women are literally having a ball remembering particular stages of their lives as they rehearse “Love, Loss and What I Wore.” When asked about getting their first bra, cast member Chelsea Papineau doesn't miss a beat as she reveals her own hysterical story. The rest of the cast dissolves into the laughter. They get it. It's universal.

Gingy, played by Yvonne Davidson, discovers she can tell her whole life story through what she remembers wearing to Brownies, dancing school, senior prom, weddings and divorces. Her granddaughter now plays dress-up with her old clothes. “Will she remember this when I'm gone? Will she even remember me?”

One of Anita Ansamaa's characters tells about visiting her fiancé in prison and what she did and didn't wear on these special occasions. The ending of her particular story is an unforgettable shock.

Sarah Gartshore, a well-known local actor and playwright, shares the story of Merrill who loves her stylish boots and short skirts. Again, the Ephron sisters pull the rug out from under us with their narrative surprises. Many remember the fun it was to live through the mini-skirt era, but few have a story like Merrill's.

High heels? Yes, women have celebrated and cursed them, eventually tossing them aside in a graveyard of rejects. Amanda Pride's character, pinch-toed spike-heeled Heather, discovers the much maligned Birkenstocks. Will she go to the other side? Does she really look like a troll in Birks?

The riveting cast of five is joined on stage by musician Sarah Craig who delights the audience with her original music. The play's art work is by talented local artist Monique Legault.

Love, Loss and What I Wore, a fundraiser for Sudbury Theatre Centre and CKLU Radio, plays Sunday, Nov. 4 at STC. Director Judi Straughan can't wait to hear audiences laugh.

Tickets are available for the 7 p.m. show only; the 2 p.m. show is sold out.

Tickets cost $30 each, and are available online at sudburytheatre.ca, by calling the STC DiBrina Box Office at 705-674-8381 or in person at 170 Shaughnessy St.
