A locally-produced film shot in the fall of 2014 in Azilda and Valley East will be screened at Cinéfest Sudbury International Film Festival at 9 p.m. Sept. 20.

Unearthing is about two characters — Healy James and Fisher Hart — who have harboured a deep, mysterious secret for their entire lives.

When Healy discovers the key to unlocking the mystery is buried in a suspected killer's property, he must force Fisher to help him find it.

The film stars Tim Rozon (Schitt's Creek), Jodie Balfour (Bomb Girls) and 2014 TIFF rising star Julia Sarah Stone.

Unearthing is produced by Sudbury production companies Hideaway Pictures and Timschel Pictures. It was written by Jamie Taylor and directed by Jon Deitcher.

“It was special to me, as I grew up in the valley, so I had fun playing in my backyard,” said Hideaway Pictures owner David Anselmo, in an email.

“We found a great farm there, and worked with Valley Growers, who undertook growing a wheat field for us over the summer.”

He said he's excited for the Cinéfest screening.

“Cinéfest is a great venue for this,” Anselmo said. “They work hard for us northern filmmakers and they are a great medium to screen work that might not get a big screening.

“Also, the audiences at Cinéfest are the best I've encountered. I'm always very proud to be able to make movies in my hometown, but I'm even prouder when they screen here for the people I grew up with. I'm extremely happy.”

Unearthing is a “great contained thriller,” and the directors did a “fabulous job of showcasing Sudbury,” he said. “The audience will get to see Sudbury in a whole different light.”

Anselmo said the production team has applied to screen the film at several other film festivals. It's also looking to have a limited theatrical release in Canada.
