Sudbury Indie Cinema

Reopens Feb. 3

After a shutdown due to provincial COVID-19 health restrictions, Sudbury Indie Cinema reopens Feb. 3. Among the films opening at the Indie in February are the shortlist for the Best International Feature at the Oscars, including Drive My Car (Japan), Compartment No. 6 (Finland), The Worst Person In The World (Norway). Sudbury Theatre Centre PA Day Camp

Feb. 4

Exploration and fun are the key words for Sudbury Theatre Centre’s PA Day Theatre Camps for youth ages 8 – 12. The next camp comes up Feb. 4 (other dates this school year are March 11 and June 13). The program includes collaborative activities and games designed to build imagination, confidence, and creative expression. Enrolment for each PA Day Theatre Camp is limited to 15 students. Activities will be held in the theatre to promote physical distancing. Masks must be worn while inside the building. Hand sanitizer will be readily available throughout the building and in the washrooms. The cost is $60 per day (includes HST) – $55 for current STC Academy students. Onaping Falls Winter Carnival 

Feb. 4-6

The Onaping Falls Winter Carnival returns Feb. 4-6. Features both in-person activities (COVID safety protocols in place) and virtual activities. Community bonfire, pancake breakfast, kids’ curling, winter carnival activities, free cross-country skiing and snowshoeing, vintage snow machine show, snow sculpture contest, window art fun and more. Carnival button required to participate in any carnival event or activity. Buttons $5 for adults and $ 3 for youth under 18 years old (under 2 years old free). Available at Levack Mini-Mart, Onaping Kwik-Way, Windy Lake Restaurant, Kelly’s Family Diner in Cartier and Roger’s Valumart in Dowling or at carnival activities. Cambrian College Foundation fundraising raffle

Draw to be held Feb. 6

Get your tickets for the Cambrian College Foundation’s raffle of gorgeous live edge dining room table. Table was hand-crafted and donated by retired skilled trades professor Robbie Duncan.  All proceeds from this raffle will support various student bursaries, allowing them to continue their studies with less financial stress. Walden Winter Carnival

Feb. 11-13

The 49th Annual Walden Winter Carnival, which runs Feb. 11-13, is going virtual. There will be more than 40 virtual, online and at-home activities for all ages, with many prizes to be won. Some of the activities include opening ceremonies, live entertainment, virtual escape room, snow sculpture contest, scavenger hunt, Valentine’s cake decorating contest, cooking demos and interactive children’s and family entertainment. The virtual event is open to everyone, but in order to qualify to win prizes, you require a button. The $5 family/household button can be purchased at Battistelli’s Your Independent Grocer, Walden Home Hardware, Rehan’s Your Independent Grocer and Canadian Tire South End and New Sudbury locations. Wine, Women & Purses fundraising raffle

Feb. 14 draw

Take part in the virtual version of Alzheimer Society Sudbury-Manitoulin North Bay & District’s 11th annual Wine, Women & Purses fundraiser. Virtual raffle for chances to win great prizes of handbags and purses filled with goods, gift cards and more. There will be four early bird draws throughout the next few weeks, and on Feb. 14, there will be a draw for the grand prize valued at $1,800. Purchase tickets online here.

Take part in virtual secondary school information nights at Lasalle Secondary School at 6:30 p.m. Feb. 16 (visit lasalle.rainbowschools.ca) and Confederation Secondary School at 6 p.m. Feb. 17 (visit confedss.rainbowschools.ca).

Virtual kindergarten and secondary school tours/registration (CSPGNO board)

Now taking place 

The Conseil scolaire public du Grand Nord de l'Ontario invites parents and their children to take a virtual tour of CSPGNO's elementary and secondary schools. Parents wishing to enroll their children in one of CSPGNO schools are invited to take a virtual tour of the modern facilities and learn about the many programs and services offered to their children. Kindergarten registration (Nouvelon board)

Now taking place

Parents of children born in 2018 who will be attending school in September 2022 are asked to contact their local French Catholic elementary school to register for kindergarten. Find more information at www.nouvelon.ca/inscription/kindergarten.

La Slague presents virtual family dance workshop (francophone activity)

Feb. 21

“Tricoter une danse en famille” workshop with Foolish Operations. Takes place via Zoom at 10 a.m. Feb. 21. This online workshop for families with children aged 3 to 8 is led by two dance artists and a musician. It invites families to explore creative movement by using wool to inspire movements like spinning, rolling, bouncing/jumping, and more. Attendees will also watch the short film “Tricoter” (5 minutes) and the team will share an original poem by author Jennifer Wickham. Coldest Night of the Year (virtual fundraiser)

Feb. 26

Take part in the virtual version of Coldest Night of the Year Feb. 26. Event raises funds for the Samaritan Centre. Collect pledges, map out a safe 2-5 kilometre route, and gather with your bubble or head out on your own. Learn more online here.

Sudbury Performance Group presents comedian Eric Johnston

Feb. 26

Takes place at Trevi Bar and Grill. Early show 7 p.m. and late show 9:30 p.m. Eric Johnston is a Canadian stand-up comedian, actor, and M.C. from Hamilton, Ont. A professionally trained entertainer, he was educated at both Humber College in Theatre Arts, and the prestigious Vancouver Film School. An agile, high-energy, and diverse performer, Johnston stars in the international children’s show, “Splatalot,” which is seen on major networks in over 170 countries around the world (including Netflix) by day, and performs nightly on some of the top comedy stages and Comedy Festivals in North America. STC presents Matthew Heiti’s Ever Falling Flight

March 3-13

Sudbury playwright Matthew Heiti will see his play Ever Falling Flight produced by Sudbury Theatre Centre March 3-13. Théâtre du Nouvel-Ontario was also to produce the play in French as Aéroportée this winter, but this has been postponed (new dates TBD). Dashing through increasingly strange ports-of-call with her (un) trusty navigator Fred, our hero takes to the skies in this comic fantasy inspired by the final, mysterious flight of Amelia Earhart and her famous 1937 record-breaking round-the-world trip. La Slague presents La veillée des éveillés (Big Franco-Ontarian Comedy Night)

March 5

Franco-Ontarian comedy is a hot trend these days as many up-and-coming stand-up comics and improv artists are making their mark. La Slague will showcase several of these rising stars in an exciting festival-style event spread across various performance spaces within the Place des Arts building. Jonathan Dion and Evelyne Roy-Molgat, both from the Ottawa area, are first on the roster and many more will be joining them. Event is to take place at 8 p.m. March 5 in the Grande Salle, Place des Arts du Grand Sudbury. Purchase tickets online here.

Celebrate Women fundraiser

March 5

CFUW Sudbury has again partnered with the YWCA and the Women’s Legal, Education and Action Fund (LEAF) to raise much-needed funds to assist women and girls in the Sudbury area with the 26th annual Celebrate Women event, set for 10 a.m. March 5. This year’s event will be virtual. Author and lifestyle pioneer Debbie Travis will speak about her recent book, Joy: Lessons from a Tuscan Villa. Tickets cost $20 each. Celtic Illusion at the Sudbury Arena

April 22 

Celtic Illusion brings its magic to the Sudbury Community Arena on April 22. Show features dance and magical illusion. Includes a cast of internationally acclaimed dancers, including performers from Riverdance and Lord of the Dance. Tickets go on sale Feb. 4 at 10 a.m. at greatersudbury.ca/tickets.
