Sudbury Performance Group presents Good Vibes

For the last couple of years, Sudbury trio Good Vibes has been bringing the party to venues all over Northern Ontario, with their repertoire of classic dance tunes, one-hit wonders, and not-so-guilty pleasures. For their acoustic performance, Ryan and Patrick bring down the volume but keep the vibes at a maximum – perfect for chair dancing, cocktail tapping, and rhythmic snacking – or for an impromptu, after-work singalong. Jazzed Up Downtown series

La Slague presents Nikamu Mamuitun / Chansons rassembleuses (Togetherness Songs)

A big boreal celebration brings together four Indigenous musical artists, Matui from Côte-Nord, Karen Pinette-Fontaine from Mani-Utenam, Scott Pien-Picard from Uashat, Ivan Boivin-Flamand from Manawan in Atikamekw country, alongside four non-Indigenous artists, Cédrick St-Onge, Chloé Lacasse, Joëlle St-Pierre and Marcie. Solid back-up band members and artistic mentorship from the likes of Florent Vollant make this indie-indigenous folk rock shine brightly in the spirit of togetherness. Cancelled: DaBaby at Sudbury Community Arena

The DaBaby concert scheduled for the Sudbury Community Arena May 20 has been cancelled “due to unforeseen circumstances.” The City of Greater Sudbury issued a media release announcing the cancellation just days before the concert this week, noting that refunds are now being offered. Those who purchased their tickets on Visa, Visa Debit, Mastercard or American Express will be given a full refund automatically applied to that same card within the next five to 10 business days. Those who purchased in-person at the box office with debit or cash must visit the Sudbury Arena at 240 Elgin Street to receive a full refund. The original tickets for the show must be presented to receive the refund and will only be provided to the original purchaser. Box Office hours of operation are Monday to Friday, excluding holidays, from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Vacant Nouvelon trustee position (call for applicants)

After the recent passing of veteran trustee André Bidal, Conseil scolaire catholique (CSC) Nouvelon will select a new trustee to represent constituents living in Greater Sudbury’s Zone 5 (Wards 7 to 12) until trustee elections take place this fall. The CSC Nouvelon invites all persons interested in serving as school board trustee for this area to submit a letter of motivation with a resume no later than 4 p.m. May 25. Defeat Depression Walk/Run

The 9th Annual Sudbury Defeat Depression walk/run takes place in Bell Park May 28. Gather at the Grace Hartman Amphitheatre. Registration starts at 9:30 a.m., and the walk/run starts at 10 a.m. Supports the Northern Initiative for Social Action (NISA). Register online here.
L’Arche Sudbury Rock the Boat fundraiser

L’Arche Sudbury, a non-profit that works with people with intellectual disabilities, has announced a new way to Rock the Boat in honour of founding member Roma Griffin. The fundraising event will run from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, May 28 in front of the Amici and Ezentials building located at 863 Barrydowne Rd. There will also be live music being performed by members of AndDeJam from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. More information is on their website, found here.
STC presents Mining Rocks

Sudbury Theatre Centre presents Mining Rocks on stage May 28 and 29, starring 16 local student actors from the Students on Stage program. Nicky, a middle grade student, must complete an assignment about mining. However, it’s not until Nicky travels down into a mine with a yellow canary named Hali, that life, and the assignment, become fascinating. This original STC musical production is suitable for young audiences and features student actors, colourful sets and original costumes. Join Sudbury Theatre Centre's Students on Stage, as they unlock a story close to the heart. Carrefour Francophone presents screening of Mia et le migou (French-language family film)

Carrefour francophone presents family French-language screenings of the film “Mia et le migou” at Sudbury Indie Cinema. One night Mia has a premonition. So after saying a few words of parting at her mother’s grave, she sets out on a journey across mountains and jungles to search for her father, who is trapped in a landslide at a remote construction site. GNO presents exhibit Pi, in progress

The Galerie du Nouvel-Ontario is proud to announce Pi, in progress, the very first exhibition in its new gallery space at Place des Arts du Grand Sudbury. Lise Beaudry, a Franco-Ontarian visual artist originally from Earlton, proposed an original sculptural installation made up of thousands of stacked archival photos. In the exhibition Pi, in progress, Beaudry shares the process behind the creation of Pi (2020-2022), a permanent installation that stands 3.14 meters tall, like a pillar at the heart of the Place des Arts’ foyer. Sudbury Arts Council photo contest
June 1 submission deadline
Sudbury Arts Council (SAC) invites amateur and professional photographers to submit images for a 2023 desk calendar. The Arts Council has an opportunity to do something fun with Journal Printing by supplying images for the company's annual complimentary calendar. The theme is Naturally Sudbury. Submissions should focus on Sudbury's natural beauty. Thirteen colour images will be selected by members of the arts council board, one for each month and a cover shot. STC presents Menopause: The Musical

Set in a department store, four women with nothing in common but a black lace bra come to realize they have a lot more to share than ever imagined. Cambrian Campus Comeback Tour

Fresh on the heels of its Virtual Spring Open House, Cambrian College is back with a full-fledged, in-person event. The Cambrian Campus Comeback Tour will take place Saturday, June 4, 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. at the college’s main campus in Sudbury. At the Cambrian Campus Comeback Tour, you will meet faculty, staff and students who will share with you details about Cambrian’s 90+ programs, student services, financial aid, and other information about the college journey. Collège Notre-Dame Le Bistro concert

Collège Notre-Dame’s Le Bistro singing café presents its new repertoire to the public during a June 9 concert.The Bistro is made up of CND music students from grades 9 to 12. Event takes place at 6:30 p.m. in the school gymnasium located at 100 Lévis Street in Sudbury. Tickets are $5 each and snacks will be available for purchase during the intermission. There will also be a sale of works of art created by the school’s visual arts students. Proceeds from ticket sales will go towards CND's music program while proceeds from the sale of artwork will support the school’s Art Club in the upcoming school year. TNO presents Par ici, le talent!

The traditional TNO Community Show is back with a project that showcases the talent of Sudbury Francophones of immigrant background. This project is realized in collaboration with the Centre de santé communautaire du Grand Sudbury (CSCGS), Communauté francophone accueillante and Place des Arts du Grand Sudbury, with the goal to create rich opportunities for Greater Sudbury's francophone cultural organizations and folks having immigrated to the region to meet, exchange, and create new ties with one another. Eight citizens will be selected to participate in three evenings of this Grand Theatrical Talent Competition presented on June 9, 10 and 11 at La Grande Salle of La Place des arts. La Slague presents CAGE with Dan Bédard

CAGE is a cyberloop band. An algorithmic composer interacts with five musicians live on stage. The software, named M, improvises grooves and controls the band’s shared space according to predetermined probabilities. In turn, the musicians improvise with what they’re given, thus closing the loop. The band’s name is a nod to the experimental composer John Cage.
