Talk by local author Nina Nesseth

Oct. 20

Local author and Science North Bluecoat Nina Nesseth is hosting an interactive talk for her second book, “Nightmare Fuel: The Science of Horror Films,” at Dynamic Earth on October 20 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.  Guests in attendance for this ticketed event will receive a signed copy of the book and hear Nesseth talk about the research that went into it. Tickets also include admission to Dynamic Earth’s Halloween themed Pumpkinferno event and light refreshments.   In Nightmare Fuel, Nesseth explores the strange and often unexpected science of fear through the lenses of psychology and physiology. How do horror films get under our skin? What about them keeps us up at night, even days later? And why do we keep coming back for more? Fundraiser for Ukrainian refugees

Oct. 21-22

A “Rayside-Balfour Welcomes Our Ukrainian Refugees” fundraiser takes place this weekend at Cousin Vinny’s Restaurant at the Chelmsford Bonaventure Mall. A karaoke show takes place 7-11 p.m. both Oct. 21 and 22. A buffet meal fundraiser takes place 5-7 p.m. Oct. 22. Email [email protected] for more information.

Comedy show (Eric Johnston)

Oct. 21

Comedian Eric Johnston returns to Sudbury Oct. 21 as part of his “Untouchabull” Comedy Tour. The show runs at 7 p.m. at the Little Montreal restaurant in downtown Sudbury. Tickets are available through Johnston’s website.

Comedy show (Jeff Leeson)

Oct. 21

Sudbury Performance Group presents comedian Jeff Leeson in his “Sorry I’m Not Kevin Hart” comedy tour. The show runs at 7 p.m. at the Trevi Bar and Grill on Lasalle Boulevard. Get tickets online here. For more than 20 years Jeff Leeson has been astonishing crowds across North America with his off the cuff, improvisational style that leaves crowds not only wanting more, but amazed at what they just witnessed. Combining traditional stand up comedy with long form improv, Jeff creates a unique and personal experience for the audience each and every show.

Great Pumpkin Hunt at Kivi Park

Oct. 22 

Get ready for a spooktacular good time this Saturday (Oct. 22) as Kivi Park once again hosts the Great Pumpkin Hunt from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. 750 pumpkins will be hidden throughout the park. Each family is invited to find a pumpkin, take it home, and enter Kivi's pumpkin carving contest. Besides the pumpkin hunt, tons of other fun activities are on the slate, including the S’mores Station, Spooky Story Trail Walk, Halloween Scavenger Hunt and the Freaky Family Photo-shoot. As if that isn’t enough, new activities this year include The Ghostly Bowling Alley, Pumpkin Tic-Tac- Toe and the Chilling Bean Bag Toss. Costumes are encouraged. A shuttle is also available for transportation. Free shuttle from the Walmart parking lot in the South End. Admission to the park for the Great Pumpkin Hunt is by donation.

Laurentian University fall open house

Oct. 22

Laurentian University faculty, staff and students have been busy preparing for Fall Open House, a highly anticipated event that will welcome future students to campus on Oct. 22. This in-person event provides the opportunity for future students to discover what it’s like to be a Laurentian student.  Registration for Fall Open House is encouraged and is available online

Susie Vinnick house concert 

Oct. 22

Acclaimed roots and blues singer-songwriter/multi-instrumentalist, Suzie Vinnick will perform in a great new venue in a private home in Sudbury on Saturday, Oct. 22 at 7:30 p.m. A Saskatoon native transplanted to the Niagara Region of Ontario, Suzie Vinnick is the proud owner of a gorgeous voice, prodigious guitar and bass chops, and an engagingly candid performance style. Lively Heritage Arts Guild presents Quilt and Craft Sale 

Oct. 22 

The Lively Heritage Arts Guild presents its Quilt and Craft Sale Oct. 22 at the Kinsmen Hall in Lively. Event runs 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Find unique one-of-a-kind items of quality hand-crafted by members. This includes knitting, quilts, weaving, crafts, jewellery, seasonal items and a silent auction. Admission is free. 

Sudbury Symphony Orchestra presents ‘Songs and Dances’

Oct. 22 

Concert features music by the great Finnish composer, Jean Sibelius and much more with guest conductor, Martin MacDonald. Pre-concert talk and post-concert reception. Concert takes place starting at 7:30 p.m. at Sudbury Theatre Centre. Tickets available through STC’s box office online or by phoning 705-674-8381.

Sudbury Art Club Fall Show and Sale

Oct. 22-23

Check out the work of local artists at this art show and sale. Event takes place at the Carmichael Community Centre (1388 Bellevue) from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 22 and 23. More than 30 artists will be exibiting. Come and meet the artists and talk about your interest. There will be free door prizes. Admission and parking is free. This is a great opportunity to buy original art from local artists and talk to the artists in Sudbury. Artists accept credit, cheques. debit and cash payments.

Sudbury Theatre Centre PA Day Camp

Oct. 24

Exploration and fun are the key words for Sudbury Theatre Centre’s PA Day Theatre Camps for youth ages eight to 12. The next camp is coming up Monday, Oct. 24 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Future dates include Friday, Feb. 3; Friday, March 10; Friday, April 28 and Friday, June 9. The program includes collaborative activities and games designed to build imagination, confidence, and creative expression. Visit sudburytheatre.com/youth for more information and to register.

Monarch butterfly presentation

Oct. 25

The Sudbury-Manitoulin District Freemasons are holding a special presentation about the plight of the Monarch Butterflies and other endangered migratory animals. This will be held in the banquet room of the Sudbury Masonic Centre – Lower Entrance – (off York Street, access road behind the York Street Extendicare). Event takes place Oct. 25 at 7 p.m. Guest speaker biologist Franco Mariotti. Participants will receive milkweed seeds.

Sudbury Burlesque presents Monster’s Ball 6: Camp Edition

Oct. 27-29

Sudbury Burlesque is bringing its audience on a chilling trip to summer camp this Halloween season! Monster’s Ball 6: Camp Edition is presented at The Grand Nightclub Oct. 27-29. Keep your camping gear out this fall, because this year’s Sudbury Burlesque spectacular is taking guests all the way back to summer camp. Celebrating the pop culture phenomena of the 1980s horror genre; over 20 performers from near and far will light up The Grand Nightclub’s Stage. Opening night will be extra special with a sweet surprise from Guilty Pleasures Bakeshop and all attendees having the chance to win the “Ultimate Sudbury Night Out,” which includes a $100 Bella Cucina Dinner, two tickets to YES Theatre and Sudbury Theatre Centre’s Elf: The Musical and a $100 Voucher for The Alibi Room. Los Variants performance at Place des Arts

Oct. 28

Los Variants perform Oct. 28 at 8 p.m. at Le Studio Desjardins, Place des Arts in downtown Sudbury. Los Variants is the brainchild of Sudbury native Vince Maccarone and is based on celebrating diversity by bending some of the rules of staying in one genre. The band takes the audience on a musical journey around the world maintaining a common thread in jazz and roots music. Expect Flamenco, Middle Eastern groove, AfroFunk and Caribbean rhythms to create a seamless mosaic of international groove. Tickets available online here.

La Slague presents Vincent Vallières + Dayv Poulin

Oct. 28 

Bolstered by a 20-year career, seven landmark albums and three Félix awards, including Performer of the Year, Vincent Vallières tells the story of the beauty and shortcomings of an everyday North American life filled with hope. Now, he has found a second wind, marked by a desire to explore certain sounds and avenues less travelled, while retaining the evocative power that distinguishes him. Vallières will cheerfully revisit his impressive repertoire to offer you a show in his image: friendly, lively and authentic. Dayv Poulin has been weaving musical landscapes since youth, be it with Les Chaizes Muzikales, Konflit Dramatik, Toe Jam Tequila or solo. This time he’s keeping things nice and intimate, giving us stripped-down takes of hits from his three previous albums, as well as a sneak peek of the next one. Sue Lampinen presents Fall Art Show and Sale

Check out new paintings and prints by local artists Sue Lampinen. Visit her studio Oct. 28-30 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. There will be door prizes and refreshments. Lampinen’s studio is located at 1350 Regent St. (across from Shell station). Phone 705-522-8068.

Centre Club d’Âge d’Or de la Vallée presents Bob Ross painting workshop 

Oct. 31 

Centre Club d’Âge d’Or de la Vallée presents a painting workshop using the Bob Ross technique. The lesson is from 9- 1p.m. and registration is $65, which includes materials, but you're advised to bring paper towels. To sign up, call 705-969-8649.

Haunted Heights Trail 

Runs weekends throughout October

Check out the Haunted Heights Trail at 1764 Kathleen St. in McCrea Heights. The 800-foot trail runs Fridays and Saturdays throughout October from 8-11 p.m. It also runs Sunday, Oct. 30 from 7-10 p.m. Admission is $10, or $7 with two non-perishable food items (human or pet). The organizers are trying to raise two tons of food for the Sudbury Food Bank. Event is OK for kids eight years of age and older. Anyone under the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult. Dogs are not permitted. Due to the terrain, the trail is not wheelchair accessible. Learn more on the event’s Facebook page.

Centre Club d’Âge d’Or de la Vallée

October activities

Centre Club d’Âge d’Or de la Vallée is hosting activities Monday through Friday each week, in addition to their special events. Every Monday from 9 to 1 p.m. the day centre is open for games, coffee and cards, with a communal dinner welcome to all at noon ($12 per lunch) and knitting from 9 to 2 p.m. Every Tuesday features line dancing from 10- 11:30 a.m. and bean-bag horseshoes (jeux de pochettes) from 1-3:30 p.m. Every Wednesday is yoga from 9:30 to 1-:30 a.m. and each Thursday will feature hula-hooping from 9-10 a.m., arts and crafts from 10 to 2 p.m. and paper tole from 11-2 p.m. (in the Salle Boivin). 

Imperfection Lives Here event 

Nov. 4

Imperfection Lives Here Inc. is hosting its second annual Between Us Ladies: Dinner Soiree at the Caruso Club 6-10 p.m. on Nov. 4. The event is billed as a “unique event to empower women to succeed in leveraging networks and forming international mentor-mentee relationships.” Tickets begin at $59.37 and are available by clicking here. This year’s event will include a silent auction, the proceeds for which will be donated to the Sudbury Women’s Centre. 

Comedy show (Ali Hassan)

Nov. 5

Marking the return of LOL Sudbury, lovers of food and fun will enjoy stand-up comic, actor, and “intermittent culinary connoisseur” Ali Hassan, who will be at Little Montreal On Saturday, Nov. 5 at 9 p.m., as part of his Does This Taste Funny? tour. The event follows Hassan’s appearance at the 9th edition of Wordstock Sudbury, and is billed as a stand-up performance that deconstructs a chef’s journey from food to comedy, reads a release from the comedy festival. Hassan’s comedy show draws from his 12-year-journey in and out of the culinary world. As a celebrated stand-up comic, actor, and radio host, known for film roles in Breakaway, French Immersion, and as the memorable Lebanese ‘Uncle Stevie’ opposite Sean William Scott, Jay Baruchel, and Eugene Levy in the hockey hit Goon. Also an author, check out Alli Hassan’s book, “Is There Bacon in Heaven?” Tickets go on sale Thursday, Oct. 13, and can be purchased at www.lolsudbury.com, at the LOL Sudbury Downtown Box Office (40 Larch Street -Unit 103), and over the phone at 705-688-1234. Individual tickets cost $25, but bring your friends and you can reserve a table of four for $85.

Université du troisième âge monthly educational breakfast

Nov. 6

The breakfast takes place at the Northbury Hotel and Conference Centre at 11:50 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 6. Isabelle Carignan, PhD, will give a presentation in French on medical vocabulary and cardiac surgery. The event costs $25 for members or $30 for non-members. The Legendary Downchild Blues Band

Nov. 12

Who knew it would take The Legendary Downchild Blues Band over two years to resume their 50th Anniversary Tour? The tour has now officially been renamed The Longest 50th Anniversary Tour Ever! The band will perform the final show of the tour in Sudbury at the Fraser Auditorium on Saturday, Nov. 12 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets can be purchased at www.downchild.com.

St. Mark’s United Church Frosty Fair 

Nov. 12 

St. Mark’s United Church (45 Walford Rd. in the South End) holds its Frosty Fair from 1-4 p.m. Nov. 12. Enjoy a cafe with apple cider and cookies, craft table, bake table and book sale. Admission is free. The cafe is by donation. Masking is appreciated by organizers.

Sudbury Indie Cinema presents SOAR Film Festival 

Nov. 11-13

SOAR (Sudbury Outdoor Adventure Reels) Film Festival is the first of its kind in Northern Ontario, Canada. A unique partnership has emerged between Laurentian University’s Outdoor Adventure Leadership Program (ADVL) and Sudbury Indie Cinema. With so many film festivals moving towards the online or virtual platforms only this past year, this team thought it would be great to shift the focus on bringing adventure film-lovers together in a safe cinematic environment to view both top adventure films, as well as locally made films, in-theatre. The festival will contain a curated programme of adventure and outdoor travel-themed features from around the world, as well as adventures shorts- both local and international. Special consideration in the selection of films will be given to diverse voices, as well as those which feature outdoor activities and adventures enjoyed in Northeastern Ontario, namely: wilderness canoeing, back-country winter travel, Nordic skiing, kayaking, mountain biking, and climbing. Collège Boréal hosts ‘Madame Bolduc on Tour’ exhibition

Until mid-November

Mary Travers, a depression-era Quebec folk musician, is the subject of a bilingual travelling exhibition called “Madame Bolduc on Tour,” on display at Collège Boréal until late fall. You may remember the story of Travers, also known as Madame Bolduc and La Bolduc, from this Historica Canada Heritage Minute. The exhibition, which is free, can be visited Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Collège Boréal's Alphonse-Desjardins Resource Centre, located at 21 Lasalle Blvd. in Sudbury. It runs until mid-November.

Sudbury Performance Group presents Things My Mother Taught Me (dinner theatre)

Nov. 17-19

Olivia and Gabe are moving into their first apartment together. They’ve just packed up all of their belongings and driven halfway across the country to start a new life together in Chicago. Their moving day doesn’t go exactly as planned, though, and things become slightly more complicated when all of their parents show up to help! Can a two-bedroom apartment contain all of the love, laughs, worry, and wisdom that’s about to happen? Catch this dinner theatre performance Nov. 17-19 from 6-10 p.m. each evening at Ukrainian National Federation. Tickets are available online here.

Greater Sudbury Santa Claus Parade 

Nov. 19

The Greater Sudbury Santa Claus Parade committee has announced that this year’s parade is happening starting at 5:30 p.m. Nov. 19. The local Santa Claus parade was cancelled in both 2020 and 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, so the parade is returning this year after last running in 2019. The parade organizers said the parade will close the downtown core to vehicular traffic from approximately 5-8 p.m. Nov. 19. Parking will not be allowed along the parade route. The southbound lanes of Notre Dame Avenue will also be closed between Kathleen and Ste. Anne road starting at 1 p.m. that day. A press conference will be held at a later date with more details. Cinéfest Sudbury film screening 

Nov. 23 

Cinéfest Sudbury organizers are happy to announce Chien blanc (White Dog) as the final Red Carpet Patron Program film presentation of 2022. The French Canadian drama, directed by Anaïs Barbeau-Lavalette and starring Kacey Rohl and Denis Ménochet, is set to screen at SilverCity Sudbury on Wednesday, Nov. 23 at 7 p.m. Individual tickets are on sale now with limited availability at www.cinefest.com, at the Cinéfest Box Office (located at 40 Larch Street, Unit 103), or by phoning 705-688-1234. All Red Carpet Patrons are granted free admittance with their Red Carpet Patron card.

Art Gallery of Sudbury presents Undergrowth by Sara Angelucci

Runs until Nov. 27

This fall, the Art Gallery of Sudbury hosts an exhibition by Toronto contemporary artist Sara Angelucci titled Undergrowth. The exhibition comprises 28 artworks including four series of photography-based works, an audio installation, and the new video projection Ghost Orchard. The exhibition continues at the Art Gallery of Sudbury until Nov. 27. Admission is free with a donation.

CP Holiday Train

Nov. 30

After two years of virtual concerts, Sudburians will have the chance to see the Canadian Pacific (CP) Holiday Train return to the rails on its first cross-continent tour in three years. Stopping in Sudbury Wednesday, Nov. 30 at 8:50 p.m., the train will again raise money, food and awareness for local food banks in communities along the CP network. From 9:15 p.m. to 9:45 p.m., award-winning musician and singer-songwriter, Tenille Townes, and Oji-Cree singer-songwriter, Aysanabee, will take to the stage at the event. Holiday Train shows are free to attend, but CP asks attendees to bring a cash or non-perishable food donation if they're able. A full schedule is available at cpr.ca/holidaytrain.
