Émergence: juried student art exhibition

March 30 opening reception

The Art Gallery of Sudbury is hosting Émergence, which runs until May 7. Representing a cross-section of artistic development from Grades 9 through 12 in painting, drawing, sculpture, printmaking, photography and mixed media, this exhibition of student artwork is an opportunity for the students to share their vision with family, friends, and the public. It also provides an opportunity for students to participate in a professionally executed art exhibition, providing the student artists recognition, encouragement, mentorship, a positive art experience and more. 

An opening reception and award presentation will run from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Thursday March 30, at the gallery. Admission to the exhibition is by donation and the show runs until May 7. 

 

Walk for a Smile 

March 31 

Cambrian College Dental Hygiene students will be celebrating a milestone moment later this month as they take part in their 20th annual Walk for A Smile fundraising event. The popular event has students lacing up and walking the talk as they log their kilometres and raise funds for local charity.  This year’s proceeds will go towards the Northern Ontario Families of Children with Cancer organization and the Access to Care Fund at Cambrian’s community dental clinic, for those in need of urgent dental care. This year’s 20th annual Walk for A Smile is taking place Friday, March 31. In celebration of the 20th anniversary milestone, students have set a goal of raising $5,000. Varietay Masquez at Place des Arts

March 31 

La Brigade 2023 is a group of teenagers from the Sudbury area who, since the beginning of the year, meet every week to create a magnificent show. This year, the Brigade of TNO offers you an evening of theatrical showcases. Come discover their costumes, their soundtracks, and all their talents at Place des Arts. This event will take place at Studio Desjardins at Place des Arts du Grand Sudbury on March 31 at 7 p.m. Tickets are available online here.

 

Cambrian College music department hosts Duo 46 

March 31

The Cambrian College music department hosts the multi-award-winning violin and guitar ensemble Duo 46 on March 31. The program includes music written specifically for the duo, as well as select pieces by 21st century composers. The concert will take place in the Cambrian College Amphitheatre (room 2226) at 7:30 p.m. 

 

Comedian Ron James performance

April 1 

Comedian Ron James performs at Laurentian University’s Fraser Auditorium April 1. Canada's stand-out amongst “stand-ups,” award-winning comedian Ron James has been selling out theatres for over 20 years with his marathon, side-splitting performances. Marshalling a comedian's eye for satire and a writer's ear for language, James takes his audience on a breath-taking, non-stop roller coaster ride, cutting a wide swath through contemporary culture with a razor-sharp wit, uncompromising standard and unique, poetically honed delivery. Spring Open House at Lampinen Fine Art and Custom Framing

April 1-2

Owner/artist Sue Lampinen is holding her Spring Open House Saturday, April 1 and Sunday, April 2 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Check out new work by Lampinen, as well as specials, refreshments and door prizes. 1350 Regent St., across from the Shell Station.

 

Université du troisième âge de Sudbury event 

April 2 

Nathalie Sherback and Lara Fielding make a presentation on tourism in Greater Sudbury at the next Université du troisième âge de Sudbury event. Playsmelter staged reading

April 6

Playsmelter presents a staged reading of “Fuil” by Garret Ryan. In this semi-autobiographical fiction Fuil (Pronounced Foo-ill), Patrick Connors, a young man and lost soul from North Bay, finds himself on a path to nowhere. While drifting through, he encounters Johnny, a bitter alcoholic Irish-Canadian war veteran, and Yitzhak, a warmly enigmatic rabbi of an historical Northern synagogue. As the three men’s stories connect and their lives become increasingly intertwined, they each embark on a journey of rebirth and cleansing, confronting head on their respective issues of violence, generational trauma, and faith, as Patrick attempts to decipher what it means to be a good man. Sudbury Performance Group dinner theatre

April 13-15

Sudbury Performance Group presents a dinner theatre performance of The Sweet Delilah Swim Club April 13-15 at the Ukrainian National Federation Hall. Five Southern women, whose friendships began many years ago on their college swim team, set aside a long weekend every August to recharge those relationships. Free from husbands, kids, and jobs, they meet at the same beach cottage, the “Sweet Delilah” on North Carolina’s Outer Banks to catch up, laugh, and meddle in each other’s lives. Doors open at 6 p.m., with dinner at 6:30 p.m. and the performance at 7:30 p.m. Tickets cost $60 (includes meal by Helvi’s Catering). Purchase tickets online here.

 

La Slague presents Luce Dufault

April 15 

Born in Orleans, Ont., Luce Dufault transcends time and space with her warm, powerful, exceptional voice. Place des Arts will offer an intimate setting that showcases her rich talent, where her unique voice will shine through the highlights of her vast repertoire, as well as songs from her new album. Dufault is a true performer in every sense of the word, one whose every note, every word endures long after the house lights have come on. Cambrian College spring open house

April 15

Cambrian College is laying out the welcome mat for its annual Spring Open House. Spring Open House will be held Saturday, April 15, from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the college’s main campus in Sudbury. Activities at Spring Open House include: Campus tours, prizes, including $10,000, a $1,000 scholarship, pizza oven, and custom firepit built by Cambrian students, free food, swag and information booths (programs, student services, and financial aid). Walden Art Club Spring Show 2023

April 15-16

The Walden Art Club hosts its Spring Show 2023 at the Walden Arena (TM Davies Community Centre in Lively) from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day. Admission is free. Buy yourself some local art and support local artists. More info is available on the club’s Facebook page.

 

Drag’d to Sunday School
April 16 

Drag’d To Sunday School was such a success the first time so now it's time for round 2! GG Van der Kuntz and her guests Emma Daniels, Rose Noir Fabulous Fushsia, Ivonna Richman, Maverick King, Stacey Woods, Yanni Bannani along with special guests Cira Flexion and Sizzle Sizzle this show is bigger and better than the first! This brunch includes the fabulous drag show by GG Van der Kuntz and her guests, an all-you-can-eat gourmet brunch, Specialty Mimosas and fantastic door prizes. Sudbury Music Festival Stars of Excellence concert and awards ceremony

April 17 

Sudbury Music Festival holds a "Stars of Excellence" concert and award ceremony on the evening of Monday, April 17 at St. Andrew's Place. This concert presents a program of festival highlight performances in all categories. Tickets at the door are $20 for adults and $10 for students and seniors. National Canadian Film Day 

April 19

Celebrate National Film Day at the Sudbury Indie Cinema. Since 2014, the co-op theatre has been leading the charge on this day to both boost access to Canadian cinema and to fundraise for the quality programming we offer the region. TNO presents Toqaq mecimi puwiht/Delphine rêve toujours

April 22 

Delphine is a young Wolastoqey (Maliseet) girl, with a head full of dreams and a fierce determination. Since her father lost the drum of his deceased muhsums, Delphine has been dead set on finding it at all costs. One autumn day, as the wind picks up, Delphine is transported to the world of the forest spirits. There she meets the mischievous porcupine, the opera-singing owl, and Kiwahq, the terrible beast with a heart of ice! Will she manage to overcome the challenges of the forest to find her drum? This show for young audiences runs April 22 starting at 10:30 a.m. at Place des Arts. Purchase tickets online here.

 

STC/YES Theatre present A Night on Broadway 

April 23

After the quick sellout of A Night on Broadway, YES Theatre and Sudbury Theatre Centre (STC) have announced they are adding another show, April 23 at 3:30 p.m. A Night on Broadway will feature artists from the Broadway and national touring productions of Dear Evan Hansen, Mean Girls and Hamilton, performing in a concert alongside 2023 YES/STC company members. You can also join the cast after the show in Sudbury Theatre Centre’s ‘Steve's Encore Lounge’ for a beverage and continued music. On stage at the Sudbury Theatre Centre, tickets are $35 and there is reserved seating. Tickets are available at Sudburytheatre.com. As this is an extra offering to their season, season pass holders receive a 10 per cent discount. 

 

Sudbury Performance Group presents comedian Elvira Kurt

April 23 

A Toronto native and alumna of Second City, Elvira Kurt is an accomplished comedian who has hosted her own TV program in Canada, has starred in an acclaimed Comedy Central half-hour special, has earned multiple nominations as College Comedian Of The Year, and has countless other TV credits as a comic, actress, host, writer – often on gay-lesbian shows. You can catch a performance by Kurt Saturday, April 22 at the Trevi Bar and Grill. Tickets cost $35 or $55 for VIP tickets (premium seats, meet-and-greet and complimentary snacks). April activities 

Mondays cafe, card games, exercises, dinner and knitting, Tuesdays line dancing and bean bag toss, Wednesdays yoga and paper tole, Thursdays beading, Fridays darts, line dancing and cribbage.
