Sudbury Performance Group dinner theatre

Sudbury Performance Group presents a dinner theatre performance of The Sweet Delilah Swim Club April 13-15 at the Ukrainian National Federation Hall. Five Southern women, whose friendships began many years ago on their college swim team, set aside a long weekend every August to recharge those relationships. Free from husbands, kids, and jobs, they meet at the same beach cottage, the “Sweet Delilah” on North Carolina’s Outer Banks to catch up, laugh, and meddle in each other’s lives. Cambrian College spring open house

Cambrian College is laying out the welcome mat for its annual Spring Open House. Spring Open House will be held Saturday, April 15, from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the college’s main campus in Sudbury. Activities at Spring Open House include: Campus tours, prizes, including $10,000, a $1,000 scholarship, pizza oven, and custom firepit built by Cambrian students, free food, swag and information booths (programs, student services, and financial aid). Fight Against Cancer Gala

Sudbury Secondary School will host its third Fight Against Cancer Gala on Friday, April 21 to raise funds for the Northern Cancer Centre through Angels in Pink. The gala, featuring dinner, entertainment and a silent auction, will be held in the lower hall at the Caruso Club, 385 Haig Street in Sudbury. Doors for the gala will open at 5:30 p.m. Dinner will be served at 6:30 pm with entertainment presented by Sudbury Secondary School students, alumni and community members. Dinner will be followed by music to dance the night away, provided by graduate Ben MacKenzie of Shake It Up DJ Service. Nickel City Sound presents The Happy Show

Nickel City Sound — Sudbury’s Award Winning Women’s Barbershop Chorus — and the Young Sudbury Singers are hosting their first live spring concert together Saturday, April 22 at 2:30 p.m. at Sudbury Secondary School’s Sheridan Auditorium. Water Stewardship Gathering

The Water Stewardship Gathering event is a place to gather and grow as water stewards using an approach that braids community action, Indigenous Knowledge, and western science. This free, public event is part of Science North’s Earth Weekend Celebration. It is a great opportunity to learn and share stories about local waterways that are important to you, connect with stewardship groups and Knowledge Holders, and gain the tools to help take care of our beautiful lakes, wetlands, and streams. There will be outreach booths, free resources, and presentations throughout the event. The event, being put on by the Junction Creek Stewardship Committee, runs 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. April 23 at Science North’s Ramsey Room. Free admission.
Nostalgiacon

It’s almost time to dust off your old fanny pack, digital watch, Hammer pants and rediscover your Gargoyles Pogs, because Nostalgiacon is taking place on April 23. Nostalgiacon is new to Sudbury, and is being organized by the same people behind the annual Northern Game Expo, which they’re still planning on hosting in the fall. The event’s special celebrity guests will be actors Pat Mastroianni and Stacie Mistysyn, best known for their roles as Joey Jeremiah and Caitlin Ryan from the television series Degrassi Junior High, Degrassi High and Degrassi: The Next Generation. STC/YES Theatre present A Night on Broadway

After the quick sellout of A Night on Broadway, YES Theatre and Sudbury Theatre Centre (STC) have announced they are adding another show, April 23 at 3:30 p.m. A Night on Broadway will feature artists from the Broadway and national touring productions of Dear Evan Hansen, Mean Girls and Hamilton, performing in a concert alongside 2023 YES/STC company members. You can also join the cast after the show in Sudbury Theatre Centre’s ‘Steve's Encore Lounge’ for a beverage and continued music. On stage at the Sudbury Theatre Centre, tickets are $35 and there is reserved seating. Tickets are available at Sudburytheatre.com. Sudbury Performance Group presents comedian Elvira Kurt

A Toronto native and alumna of Second City, Elvira Kurt is an accomplished comedian who has hosted her own TV program in Canada, has starred in an acclaimed Comedy Central half-hour special, has earned multiple nominations as College Comedian Of The Year, and has countless other TV credits as a comic, actress, host, writer – often on gay-lesbian shows. Earth Day event at St. Peter’s United Church

St. Peter’s United Church (203 York St.) holds an Earth Day event April 23. The church will be hosting an Earth Day service followed by a presentation and discussion on the urgency of the climate crisis. Guest speakers are climate activists Cathy Orlando and Sophia Mathur. An evening with Tessa and Petr

Local musicians Tessa and Petr Balaz recently moved back to Sudbury, and saw a lack of diverse music showcases happening year round. With the Steve’s Encore lounge in the Sudbury Theatre Centre being recently renovated, they decided to use the venue to host monthly events called “An Evening with Tessa and Petr” with special guests. These events take place on the last Wednesday of every month. This month’s event takes place 7-9 p.m. April 26, with special guests Bad Actors and Brendan Belowos.
Science North hosts Northern MedTalks
April 27
Science North is preparing to host the third annual Northern MedTalks event on April 27, at 7 p.m. Once again, 10 Northern Ontario health care leaders will take the stage and share engaging stories about human health in this free event. Each 10-minute talk is co-produced by health-care presenters and master’s students of the Science Communication program led by Laurentian University and Science North. Tickets for the in-person presentations in the Vale Cavern are sold out, but a live stream will be available on Eastlink Community TV beginning at 7 p.m. and accessible online through Science North’s website. Sudbury Theatre Centre PA Day Camp

Exploration and fun are the key words for Sudbury Theatre Centre’s PA Day Theatre Camps for youth ages eight to 12. Six full-day Theatre Camps will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Remaining dates this school year include Friday, April 28 and Friday June 9. Les Concerts La Nuit sur l’étang is inviting all French-language groups and solo performers to sign up for three days of workshops at la Brunante 2023. Local performers will join music students, teachers and graduates of Rainbow Schools to celebrate the 15th Anniversary of the Joan Mantle Music Trust during a gala Community Concert on Saturday, April 29. Clean Up Blitz

It’s time to register for the City of Greater Sudbury’s annual springtime clean-up blitz. “Show your community pride and do your part for the environment by registering in the Clean Up Blitz event,” the city stated in a news release. The blitz will be held from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 6. “Registered participants will spend two hours picking up litter on a designated public roadside.” Participants must register by Friday, April 28. Register your group at any Citizen Service Centre/Library or online at GreaterSudbury.ca/Cleanup. Safety vests, gloves and garbage bags will be supplied. All participants must review safety tips and sign a waiver. Names of participants listed on the waiver forms will be entered in a draw to win prizes.
Art Gallery of Sudbury presents Émergence

The Art Gallery of Sudbury is hosting Émergence, which runs until May 7. Representing a cross-section of artistic development from Grades 9 through 12 in painting, drawing, sculpture, printmaking, photography and mixed media, this exhibition of student artwork is an opportunity for the students to share their vision with family, friends, and the public. It also provides an opportunity for students to participate in a professionally executed art exhibition, providing the student artists recognition, encouragement, mentorship, a positive art experience and more. Admission to the exhibition is by donation.
GNO presents Seed the Skin exhibit

The Galerie du Nouvel-Ontario’s latest exhibition, Seed the Skin by Fransaskois artist Laura St. Pierre, is just in time for springtime and Earth Day. The exhibition is presented from April 6 to May 20, inclusively. Admission to the GNO, which is located in the Place des Arts building, is always free. Presented in the form of an immersive installation, the exhibition Seed the Skin continues the ecological approach of artist Laura St. Pierre, highlighting the relationship we have with the environment while exposing the harmful impacts of our activities. St. Pierre will use her residency at the GNO as a laboratory to experiment with conversion of the electromagnetic vibrations of plants into music. The public will be able to "listen" to the plants! The Galerie du Nouvel-Ontario's hours of operation are Tuesday to Saturday from noon to 6 p.m.
Calendar photo submissions

Sudbury Arts Council (SAC) invites submissions for its 2024 desk calendar. This year's theme is Iconic Sudbury. Included in a list of iconic images might be the Big Nickel, the Super Stack, the watertower, the Silver Bullet, the Flour Mill Silos, Capreol trains, the AY Jackson lookout, the Sudbury Wolves, historic buildings, The Bridge of Nations, Science North, the Art Gallery of Sudbury, the Grotto, recognizable sculptures and so much more. Participants may enter a maximum of two images, horizontal format only. Photographers selected for the calendar will receive an honorarium as well as five copies of the calendar. The deadline for submission is June 1, 2023. Submissions should be sent to [email protected].
