Fight Against Cancer Gala

April 21 

Sudbury Secondary School will host its third Fight Against Cancer Gala on Friday, April 21 to raise funds for the Northern Cancer Centre through Angels in Pink. The gala, featuring dinner, entertainment and a silent auction, will be held in the lower hall at the Caruso Club, 385 Haig Street in Sudbury. Doors for the gala will open at 5:30 p.m. Dinner will be served at 6:30 p.m. with entertainment presented by Sudbury Secondary School students, alumni and community members. Dinner will be followed by music to dance the night away, provided by graduate Ben MacKenzie of Shake It Up DJ Service. Tickets for the gala are $55 per person or $400 for a table of eight and are available at Sudbury Secondary School. Climate Justice Corner launch/Earth Day event at library

April 22 

Celebrate Earth Day at the main Greater Sudbury Public Library branch on Mackenzie Street Saturday, April 22. The event is also the launch of the new Climate Justice Corner at the library. Come out to enjoy readings, music, poetry, and art and activities for all ages, exploring climate justice and celebrating Mother Earth from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. The event is being co-hosted by Greater Sudbury Public Library and Coalition for a Liveable Sudbury.

Sudbury Indie Cinema presents Cereal Cartoon Party 

April 22 

After the widely successful sold-out Saturday Morning All-You-Can-Eat Cereal Cartoon Party (Christmas Edition) that happened at Sudbury Indie Cinema in December, Cereal Cartoon Parties are returning to Sudbury! Happening April 8 and 22, Sudbury Indie Cinema is hosting another three-hour compilation of retro cartoons, commercials and PSA’s from the 1930s to 1990s - with an endless amount of your favourite childhood cereals. Starting at 10 a.m., you can stay in your PJ’s and head straight to the Indie for an unforgettable morning. With more than 30 varieties of cereal to choose from like Trix, Lucky Charms, Cocoa Pebble, Reese Puffs, Captain Crunch, as well as gluten free, vegan, and low carb options including milk varieties, there is something for everyone. TNO presents Toqaq mecimi puwiht/Delphine rêve toujours

April 22 

Delphine is a young Wolastoqey (Maliseet) girl, with a head full of dreams and a fierce determination. Since her father lost the drum of his deceased muhsums, Delphine has been dead set on finding it at all costs. One autumn day, as the wind picks up, Delphine is transported to the world of the forest spirits. There she meets the mischievous porcupine, the opera-singing owl, and Kiwahq, the terrible beast with a heart of ice! Will she manage to overcome the challenges of the forest to find her drum? Nickel City Sound presents The Happy Show 

April 22 

Nickel City Sound — Sudbury’s Award Winning Women’s Barbershop Chorus — and the Young Sudbury Singers are hosting their first live spring concert together Saturday, April 22 at 2:30 p.m. at Sudbury Secondary School’s Sheridan Auditorium. The show is entitled The Happy Show. TIckets cost $20 per adult or $10 for kids and teens up to age 17. Kids aged 6 and under get in for free. Sudbury Performance Group presents comedian Elvira Kurt

April 22 

A Toronto native and alumna of Second City, Elvira Kurt is an accomplished comedian who has hosted her own TV program in Canada, has starred in an acclaimed Comedy Central half-hour special, has earned multiple nominations as College Comedian Of The Year, and has countless other TV credits as a comic, actress, host, writer – often on gay-lesbian shows. Water Stewardship Gathering at Science North

April 23 

The Water Stewardship Gathering event is a place to gather and grow as water stewards using an approach that braids community action, Indigenous Knowledge, and western science. This free, public event is part of Science North’s Earth Weekend Celebration. It is a great opportunity to learn and share stories about local waterways that are important to you, connect with stewardship groups and Knowledge Holders, and gain the tools to help take care of our beautiful lakes, wetlands, and streams. There will be outreach booths, free resources, and presentations throughout the event. The event, being put on by the Junction Creek Stewardship Committee, runs 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. April 23 at Science North’s Ramsey Room. Free admission.

Earth Day event at St. Peter’s United Church 

April 23 

St. Peter’s United Church (203 York St.) holds an Earth Day event April 23. The church will be hosting an Earth Day service followed by a presentation and discussion on the urgency of the climate crisis. Guest speakers are climate activists Cathy Orlando and Sophia Mathur. The musically talented Emilia Peralta Castillo will also perform. Church service 10:30 a.m., lunch and learn from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Bring your own lunch and reusable cup. Nostalgiacon 

April 23 

It’s almost time to dust off your old fanny pack, digital watch, Hammer pants and rediscover your Gargoyles Pogs, because Nostalgiacon is taking place on April 23. Nostalgiacon is new to Sudbury, and is being organized by the same people behind the annual Northern Game Expo, which they’re still planning on hosting in the fall. The event’s special celebrity guests will be actors Pat Mastroianni and Stacie Mistysyn, best known for their roles as Joey Jeremiah and Caitlin Ryan from the television series Degrassi Junior High, Degrassi High and Degrassi: The Next Generation. Tickets are available on Eventbrite, with more information available by clicking here. They range in price from $15 to $100. The event is scheduled to take place from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Cambrian College. 

STC/YES Theatre present A Night on Broadway 

April 23

After the quick sellout of A Night on Broadway, YES Theatre and Sudbury Theatre Centre (STC) have announced they are adding another show, April 23 at 3:30 p.m. A Night on Broadway will feature artists from the Broadway and national touring productions of Dear Evan Hansen, Mean Girls and Hamilton, performing in a concert alongside 2023 YES/STC company members. You can also join the cast after the show in Sudbury Theatre Centre’s ‘Steve's Encore Lounge’ for a beverage and continued music. On stage at the Sudbury Theatre Centre, tickets are $35 and there is reserved seating. Tickets are available at Sudburytheatre.com. As this is an extra offering to their season, season pass holders receive a 10 per cent discount. 

An evening with Tessa and Petr

April 26

Local musicians Tessa and Petr Balaz recently moved back to Sudbury, and saw a lack of diverse music showcases happening year round. With the Steve’s Encore lounge in the Sudbury Theatre Centre being recently renovated, they decided to use the venue to host monthly events called “An Evening with Tessa and Petr” with special guests. These events take place on the last Wednesday of every month. This month’s event takes place 7-9 p.m. April 26, with special guests Bad Actors and Brendan Belowos.

Science North hosts Northern MedTalks

April 27 

Science North is preparing to host the third annual Northern MedTalks event on April 27, at 7 p.m. Once again, 10 Northern Ontario health care leaders will take the stage and share engaging stories about human health in this free event. Each 10-minute talk is co-produced by health-care presenters and master’s students of the Science Communication program led by Laurentian University and Science North. Tickets for the in-person presentations in the Vale Cavern are sold out, but a live stream will be available on Eastlink Community TV beginning at 7 p.m. and accessible online through Science North’s website. Tickets can be reserved by visiting sciencenorth.ca/medtalks or on-site at Science North.

Shkagamik-Kwe presents Remains

April 27-29

After the death of their uncle, the time has come for Dust and Bone to face their deepest fears. Two brothers, on a well worn path of secrets and denial, find their ancestors holding them and turning them toward truth and their love for one another. A Project Uncle performance, Remains is, at its core, about healing. It is about deep loss and even deeper love. It is about grieving what we’ve lost and honouring what remains. Remains stars local Anishinaabe artists Brett Recollet, Lisa-Marie Naponse, Leland Bell, Lois Apaquash and one awesome Zhaaganash, Bill Sanders. Original music created by Leland Bell, Arlo Gartshore and Lisa-Marie Naponse. Soundtrack by Marc Donato. Set design by Sarah King Gold. Event runs April 27-29 at Place des Arts. Sudbury Theatre Centre PA Day Camp

April 28

Exploration and fun are the key words for Sudbury Theatre Centre’s PA Day Theatre Camps for youth ages eight to 12. Six full-day Theatre Camps will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Remaining dates this school year include Friday, April 28 and Friday June 9. The program includes collaborative activities and games designed to build imagination, confidence, and creative expression. Visit sudburytheatre.com/youth for more information and to register.

La Brunante workshops

April 28-30

Les Concerts La Nuit sur l’étang is inviting all French-language groups and solo performers to sign up for three days of workshops at la Brunante 2023. The workshops will be held at College Boréal in Greater Sudbury from Friday, April 28 to Sunday, April 30. The sessions are open to all French language performers from across Ontario. Candidates are asked to go to www.labrunante.ca and click on formulaire d’inscription.

Swing into Spring vendor fair 

April 29 

Check out the Swing into Spring event at the Northbury Hotel from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. April 29. Check out a selection of handmade crafts and goods from local vendors. Door prizes include movie passes, gift cards, confections, ect. Free parking and admission. 

TNO presents G’zaagiin maleńki: je te promets une forêt

April 29 

Guided by the seasons and the sacred circle of the Indigenous Medicine Wheel, three artists come together on stage. An Abitibi cellist, a French and Anishinaabe actress and musician, and a director emigrated from Poland create an immersive space weaving sounds, echoes, textures, movement and poetry for all the senses. Drum, cello, voice, breath and gestures resonate together, forming an imaginary and mythical forest where young children will be able to make their way through the soundscapes. This half-hour-long show is aimed at toddlers and young kids aged 18 months to six years old. It runs at 10:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. April 29 at Place des Arts. Tickets available online here.

Concert in support of Joan Mantle Music Trust

April 29 

Local performers will join music students, teachers and graduates of Rainbow Schools to celebrate the 15th Anniversary of the Joan Mantle Music Trust during a gala Community Concert on Saturday, April 29. The concert will begin at 7 pm in the Sheridan Auditorium of Sudbury Secondary School. Tickets are $25 for adults and $10 for students. Doors will open at 6:15 pm for a Silent Auction which will be held throughout the evening. All proceeds will support music education in Rainbow Schools. Centre Club d’Âge d’Or de la Vallée

April activities 

Mondays cafe, card games, exercises, dinner and knitting, Tuesdays line dancing and bean bag toss, Wednesdays yoga and paper tole, Thursdays beading, Fridays darts, line dancing and cribbage. The annual general meeting runs April 12, belly dancing April 13, Mini tournoi de poches April 17, Diner amical April 20, amateur musicians April 24, painting April 24 and Thé Bazar April 30. SSO presents Jazz on the Rocks

May 6

The Sudbury Jazz Orchestra joins the SSO on stage to explore how jazz has become part of mainstream classical music, how one has influenced the other and how these two elements can be combined for a fantastic, if perhaps unusual, concert with guest soloist Christian Overton. Show starts at 7:30 p.m. May 6 at Laurentian University’s Fraser Auditorium. Tickets available online here.

Clean Up Blitz 

May 6

It’s time to register for the City of Greater Sudbury’s annual springtime clean-up blitz. “Show your community pride and do your part for the environment by registering in the Clean Up Blitz event,” the city stated in a news release. The blitz will be held from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 6. “Registered participants will spend two hours picking up litter on a designated public roadside.” Participants must register by Friday, April 28. Register your group at any Citizen Service Centre/Library or online at GreaterSudbury.ca/Cleanup. Safety vests, gloves and garbage bags will be supplied. All participants must review safety tips and sign a waiver. Names of participants listed on the waiver forms will be entered in a draw to win prizes.

Hike for Hospice 

May 7 

On Sunday, May 7, the Sudbury Hospice Foundation will host the Sudbury Credit Union Hike in support of Maison McCulloch Hospice. The 2023 Hike will take place at the Grace Hartman Amphitheatre. Registration begins at 11:30 a.m. and the Hike will begin at 1 p.m. Pledge forms are available for pick up at any Sudbury Credit Union branch, at Maison McCulloch Hospice and online at www.maisonsudburyhospice.org.

Art Gallery of Sudbury presents Émergence

Until May 7

The Art Gallery of Sudbury is hosting Émergence, which runs until May 7. Representing a cross-section of artistic development from Grades 9 through 12 in painting, drawing, sculpture, printmaking, photography and mixed media, this exhibition of student artwork is an opportunity for the students to share their vision with family, friends, and the public. It also provides an opportunity for students to participate in a professionally executed art exhibition, providing the student artists recognition, encouragement, mentorship, a positive art experience and more.  Admission to the exhibition is by donation.

Jazz Sudbury Emerging Artist Showcase

Submissions accepted until May 12 

Jazz Sudbury is beginning its annual search for talented up-and-coming Ontario jazz musicians ready to play the main stage of the Jazz Sudbury Festival this September. Jazz Sudbury’s Emerging Artist Showcase opened for submissions April 20, and will remain open until May 12. The three finalists will be determined by a panel of industry experts. These finalists will be invited to perform at the Emerging Artist Showcase in front of the judges June 23. GNO presents Seed the Skin exhibit 

Runs until May 20

The Galerie du Nouvel-Ontario’s latest exhibition, Seed the Skin by Fransaskois artist Laura St. Pierre, is just in time for springtime and Earth Day. The exhibition is presented from April 6 to May 20, inclusively. Admission to the GNO, which is located in the Place des Arts building, is always free. Presented in the form of an immersive installation, the exhibition Seed the Skin continues the ecological approach of artist Laura St. Pierre, highlighting the relationship we have with the environment while exposing the harmful impacts of our activities. St. Pierre will use her residency at the GNO as a laboratory to experiment with conversion of the electromagnetic vibrations of plants into music. The public will be able to "listen" to the plants! The Galerie du Nouvel-Ontario's hours of operation are Tuesday to Saturday from noon to 6 p.m. 

Calendar photo submissions 

June 1 deadline 

Sudbury Arts Council (SAC) invites submissions for its 2024 desk calendar. This year's theme is Iconic Sudbury. Included in a list of iconic images might be the Big Nickel, the Super Stack, the watertower, the Silver Bullet, the Flour Mill Silos, Capreol trains, the AY Jackson lookout, the Sudbury Wolves, historic buildings, The Bridge of Nations, Science North, the Art Gallery of Sudbury, the Grotto, recognizable sculptures and so much more. Participants may enter a maximum of two images, horizontal format only. Photographers selected for the calendar will receive an honorarium as well as five copies of the calendar. The deadline for submission is June 1, 2023. Submissions should be sent to [email protected].
