Northern Artists Gallery Spring Art Show 

May 11-14 

The Northern Artists Gallery holds its Spring Art Show May 11-14 at 174 Elgin St. A variety of art will be available for purchase, including painting, pottery, photographs, sculpture, woodworking, stained glass and textile works. The opening reception takes place 7-9 p.m. May 11. The show is open 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. May 11, 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. May 12, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. May 13 and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. May 14. 

Finlandia Brunch in a Box 

May 12 

Finlandia Village and SISU make it easy this year to celebrate mothers – whether a mom or a special mom-like person – with a special “Brunch in a Box” filled with delicious items to share. Each box is portioned for two, packaged with a fresh flower, and features many special Finnish treats that are sure to please including karjalan piirakka (rice pie), suolakala, (cured salmon on rye bread), pulla, maple syrup and a few special additions. Rotary Club lobster fundraiser

May 12 

The Rotary Club of Sudbury has picked a date for its annual lobster dinner fundraiser. The event will be held May 12 at the Caruso Club. Bring your dancing shoes because live entertainment will be provided by Toronto’s Saturday Night Superstars, a five-piece band playing songs from the 1960s to today’s best hits. Tickets are $175 each or $1,400 for a table of eight, which includes dinner and bar, cocktails at 6 p.m., dinner at 7 p.m. with live band and dance to follow. Jazz Sudbury Emerging Artist Showcase

Submissions accepted until May 12 

Jazz Sudbury is beginning its annual search for talented up-and-coming Ontario jazz musicians ready to play the main stage of the Jazz Sudbury Festival this September. Jazz Sudbury’s Emerging Artist Showcase opened for submissions April 20, and will remain open until May 12. The three finalists will be determined by a panel of industry experts. These finalists will be invited to perform at the Emerging Artist Showcase in front of the judges June 23. Mimi O’Bonsawin album launch

May 12 

Join musician Mimi O'Bonsawin in celebrating the release of her sixth studio album, Willow. Witness the performance of the album and be part of the filming on May 12 at Place des Arts. Willow was recorded by Mimi and her partner/co-producer Ryan Schurman, who will be featured on drums during the concert. Not only do they share the stage together on tour, they also created this album in their Log Home Studio which is tucked away in the woods allowing them to weave in textures from the natural world that surrounds them. Driven by rhythm at times, and ethereal & intimate at others, Willow invites you into their universe. The event takes place starting at 7 p.m. at Place des Arts. Purchase tickets online here.

Sudbury Performance Group presents 'Cabaret'

Until May 13

In a Berlin nightclub, as the 1920's draw to a close, a garish Master of Ceremonies welcomes the audience and assures them they will forget all their troubles at the Cabaret. With the Emcee's bawdy songs as wry commentary, Cabaret explores the dark, heady, and tumultuous life of Berlin's natives and expatriates as Germany slowly yields to the emerging Third Reich. Cliff, a young American writer newly arrived in Berlin, is immediately taken with English singer Sally Bowles. Meanwhile, Fräulein Schneider, proprietor of Cliff and Sally's boarding house, tentatively begins a romance with Herr Schultz, a mild-mannered fruit seller who happens to be Jewish. Musical numbers include "Willkommen," "Cabaret," "Don't Tell Mama" and "Two Ladies." Sudbury Performance Group presents “Cabaret” at the Thorneloe University theatre May 4-13. Junction Creek Festival

May 13 

Celebrate one of Greater Sudbury’s greatest creeks at the annual Junction Creek Festival and Trout Release event on May 13. Organizers say rain or shine, the festival will take place that Saturday from 12-3 p.m. at Twin Forks Park, at 1475 Gary Ave. in New Sudbury. “The festival is free to attend with hotdogs, ice-pops from Papaya Pops, and drinks available for purchase. There will be a variety of activities for families of all ages, including trout release, live reptiles from Science North, identifying aquatic bugs from the stream, games, and more,” organizers said. “There will also be numerous community booths to check out.” 

Sudbury Canoe Club open house 

May 13 

Sudbury Canoe Club hosts its open house from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. May 13. Event includes information about the club, a smudging ceremony, dragon boat rides, tutorials, music, yoga, cardio drumming and more. The club is located at 206 Ramsey Lake Rd. (Northern Water Sports Centre). More details are available on the club’s website

Comedian Derek Edwards performance

May 13 

Comedian Derek Edwards is known as one of the most popular stand-up comics in Canada. He lives in the Toronto area, but he loves getting back home into the small towns of Northern Ontario where the audiences seem to have more of an understanding of his laid back style and his ability to find humour in everyday things.  Edwards is off on a 12-city Ontario tour that will see him appearing in Sudbury at the Fraser Auditorium on Saturday May 13 (Tickets available at the Sudbury Theatre Centre box office). His new 90-minute performance is called in Praise of the Ostrich, a reference to pulling his head out of the sand long enough to offer commentary on the current state of affairs. 

St. Andrew’s church 50th anniversary concert

May 13 

St. Andrew’s Place is hosting a concert May 13 celebrating the building of the downtown church and housing facility 50 years ago. The concert, which starts at 6:30 p.m. in the church’s sanctuary, will feature the renowned Penderecki String Quartet. Sudbury’s Bel Canto Chorus will join the Penderecki for several numbers. A presentation precedes the concert, and a reception follows. Tickets are $50 and can be purchased at the St. Andrew’s Place Office, 111 Larch Street (phone 705-675-5303, ext. 200 to arrange pickup) or at the Sudbury Theatre Centre Box Office for cash only purchases.

Heart of Ruth fundraiser

May 13 

Heart of Ruth Mission is hosting a Spring Social and Market Fundraiser on May 13, Mother’s Day weekend. The event will feature vendors, a Mother’s Day High Tea style lunch, a large penny table, 50/50 draw, bake sale and much more. It will take place at 1520 Bancroft Ave in Sudbury between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. The entrance fee will be $2, with meals available for purchase. Heart of Ruth Mission was officially established in 2012 after a demonstrated need for help in the community of Gede, Kenya. Rainbow House Children’s Home has been the main focus and funding recipient of the organization ensuring the safety and education of the children. 

Brunch at Ste. Anne des Pins parish hall

May 14 

The Knights of Columbus will serve brunch at the Ste. Anne des Pins parish hall May 14 from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. On the menu will be eggs, pancakes, beans, ham, toast, sausages, fruit cocktail, tea, coffee and juice. Price: adults $10, children 12 and under, $5 for the first child in the family, other children from the same family are free of charge. You can use the Beech Street parking lot for free (mention to the attendant upon exiting that you were at the brunch). You can also reserve homemade beans by phoning 705-918-4734 or 705-690-4032.

Homegrown and Handmade Community Market

May 14 

You’re invited to check out the Homegrown and Handmade community makers' market May 14. The show runs 12-4 p.m. at Northbury Hotel and Conference Centre. The show will feature food items, artwork, clothing and more. Check out a vintage fashion show from two local businesses, Kulta Vintage and Business Kasual by Kalea. Bring a non-perishable food item for local food banks.

Sudbury Indie Cinema presents Céline Dion’s 2022 Biopic, “Aline”

May 17 

Sudbury Indie Cinema is proud to present “Age Up,” a special film series aimed at older audiences. Enjoy a curated selection of hidden gems at a special discounted matinee price of $6. This week: the unofficial Céline Dion biopic, “Aline.” “For Aline Dieu, nothing in the world matters more than music, family and love. Her powerful and emotional voice captivates everyone who hears it, including successful manager Guy-Claude Kamar, who resolves to do everything in his power to make her a star. As Aline ascends from local phenomenon to best selling recording artist to international superstar, she embarks on a passionate romance with the much older Kamar.” The film screening takes place May 17 at 2 p.m. at Sudbury Indie Cinema. City of Lakes Music Society concert 

May 17 

Celebrating the music of women composers, the City of Lakes Music Society is presenting “A Voice of Her Own” on Wednesday, May 17 at 7:30pm. The concert will take place at Eglise Ste. Anne-des-pins, 14 Beech St. Selections by well-known Canadian composers Elizabeth Raum and Alexina Louie are on the program, as well as music by Rebecca Clarke, a British-American composer and renowned violist whose works come from the first half of the 20 th century, and Amy Cheyney Beach, the first successful American female composer, also from the early 20 th century. The performers are well-known to Sudbury audiences: pianist Charlene Biggs, violist Jamie Arrowsmith and pianist You Young Park. Consistent with the philosophy of the City of Lakes Music Society to foster young artists, there are also two student performers: Rylan Rieder and Chloe Smilek. Tickets are available at the door. May 18 

Trinity United Church in Lively is having a takeout lunch. Your choice of soup, sandwich, dessert and drink, all for only $10. Takes place 11:30 - 1 p.m. May 18.

Sudbury Indie Cinema presents 'They Live!' 35th Anniversary 

May 20

Celebrate the 35th anniversary of a sci-fi classic with John Carpenter's "They Live!” This mind-bending film, starring Roddy Piper and Keith David, tells the story of a man who discovers a pair of sunglasses that reveal the truth about an alien invasion. With its iconic fight scenes and unforgettable one-liners, "They Live" has become a cult classic beloved by fans around the world. Part of the Sudbury Indie Creature KON (SICK) series. GNO presents Seed the Skin exhibit 

Runs until May 20

The Galerie du Nouvel-Ontario’s latest exhibition, Seed the Skin by Fransaskois artist Laura St. Pierre, is just in time for springtime and Earth Day. The exhibition is presented from April 6 to May 20, inclusively. Admission to the GNO, which is located in the Place des Arts building, is always free. Presented in the form of an immersive installation, the exhibition Seed the Skin continues the ecological approach of artist Laura St. Pierre, highlighting the relationship we have with the environment while exposing the harmful impacts of our activities. St. Pierre will use her residency at the GNO as a laboratory to experiment with conversion of the electromagnetic vibrations of plants into music. The public will be able to "listen" to the plants! The Galerie du Nouvel-Ontario's hours of operation are Tuesday to Saturday from noon to 6 p.m. 

Defeat Depression Walk 

May 27 

The 10th annual Defeat Depression event, hosted by the Northern Initiative for Social Action (NISA), is set to go May 27 in Bell Park. The event will begin at Grace Hartman Amphitheatre in Bell Park. Registrations will start at 9:30 a.m., with the walk/run to follow at 10:30 a.m. Defeat Depression is a national mental health awareness and fundraising initiative of the Mood Disorders Society of Canada. The fundraising goal for this year is $50,000, with proceeds going directly to the NISA. For more information, and to register online, visit sudbury.defeatdepression.ca. 

Gardener’s Day at the Sudbury Market 

May 27 

The Sudbury Horticultural Society has partnered with the Sudbury Market to offer an outdoor Gardener’s Day at Science North on Saturday, May 27 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The society's Spring Plant Sale will be held on that day.  A wide variety of gardening-related vendors and exhibitors will share their products and services. Manitoulin Sea Cadet ceremonial review

May 28

The 348 Manitoulin Royal Canadian Sea Cadet Corps holds its 19th annual ceremonial review on May 27 at Manitoulin Secondary School. Invited guests will be seated at 2:15 p.m. for a 2:30 p.m. start of the review.

Pet Save Walk-A-Thon

May 28 

The Annual "A New Leash On Life" Walk-A-Thon for Pet Save is back on Sunday, May 28. Pledge forms are available at the Pet Save Re"Tail" Thrift Store, the Pet Save Adoption Center in Lively and local pet food stores. Join Pet Save at the Bell Park Amphitheatre (Grace Hartman Amphitheatre) off of the corner of Paris Street and York Street. A fun filled event for all ages and your canine friends. Prizes for top pledges. All pledges receive a reuseable tote bag of goodies! Pledges over $75 receive a free t-shirt.

Centre Club d’Âge d’Or de la Vallée

May activities 

Mondays cafe, card games, exercises, dinner and knitting, Tuesdays line dancing and bean bag toss, Wednesdays yoga and paper tole, Thursdays beading, Fridays darts, line dancing and cribbage. The Fête des membres runs May 5, brunch on May 7, community dinner with amateur musicians May 15 and diner amical May 18. More information is available through the club’s Facebook page.

Calendar photo submissions 

June 1 deadline 

Sudbury Arts Council (SAC) invites submissions for its 2024 desk calendar. This year's theme is Iconic Sudbury. Included in a list of iconic images might be the Big Nickel, the Super Stack, the watertower, the Silver Bullet, the Flour Mill Silos, Capreol trains, the AY Jackson lookout, the Sudbury Wolves, historic buildings, The Bridge of Nations, Science North, the Art Gallery of Sudbury, the Grotto, recognizable sculptures and so much more. Participants may enter a maximum of two images, horizontal format only. Photographers selected for the calendar will receive an honorarium as well as five copies of the calendar. The deadline for submission is June 1, 2023. Submissions should be sent to [email protected].

Collège Notre-Dame Le Bistro student concert

June 2 

On Friday, June 2, at 6:30 p.m., Le Bistro, Collège Notre-Dame’s (CND) singing café will present its end-of-the year repertoire to the public. The concert will take place in the school gymnasium located at 100 Lévis Street in Sudbury. The students are proud to be able to share their musical talent through this event. Tickets are $5 each and snacks will be available for purchase during the intermission. Le Bistro is made up of CND music students from grades 9 to 12. Tickets can be purchased at Collège Notre-Dame’s main office or at the door prior to show time. Proceeds from ticket sales will go towards CND's music program.
