Northern Artists Gallery Spring Art Show

The Northern Artists Gallery holds its Spring Art Show May 11-14 at 174 Elgin St. A variety of art will be available for purchase, including painting, pottery, photographs, sculpture, woodworking, stained glass and textile works. Finlandia Brunch in a Box

Rotary Club lobster fundraiser

The Rotary Club of Sudbury has picked a date for its annual lobster dinner fundraiser. The event will be held May 12 at the Caruso Club. Bring your dancing shoes because live entertainment will be provided by Toronto’s Saturday Night Superstars, a five-piece band playing songs from the 1960s to today’s best hits. Tickets are $175 each or $1,400 for a table of eight, which includes dinner and bar, cocktails at 6 p.m., dinner at 7 p.m. with live band and dance to follow. Jazz Sudbury Emerging Artist Showcase
Submissions accepted until May 12
Jazz Sudbury is beginning its annual search for talented up-and-coming Ontario jazz musicians ready to play the main stage of the Jazz Sudbury Festival this September. Jazz Sudbury’s Emerging Artist Showcase opened for submissions April 20, and will remain open until May 12. The three finalists will be determined by a panel of industry experts. These finalists will be invited to perform at the Emerging Artist Showcase in front of the judges June 23. Mimi O’Bonsawin album launch

Join musician Mimi O'Bonsawin in celebrating the release of her sixth studio album, Willow. Witness the performance of the album and be part of the filming on May 12 at Place des Arts. Willow was recorded by Mimi and her partner/co-producer Ryan Schurman, who will be featured on drums during the concert. Not only do they share the stage together on tour, they also created this album in their Log Home Studio which is tucked away in the woods allowing them to weave in textures from the natural world that surrounds them. Sudbury Performance Group presents 'Cabaret'

In a Berlin nightclub, as the 1920's draw to a close, a garish Master of Ceremonies welcomes the audience and assures them they will forget all their troubles at the Cabaret. With the Emcee's bawdy songs as wry commentary, Cabaret explores the dark, heady, and tumultuous life of Berlin's natives and expatriates as Germany slowly yields to the emerging Third Reich. Cliff, a young American writer newly arrived in Berlin, is immediately taken with English singer Sally Bowles. Meanwhile, Fräulein Schneider, proprietor of Cliff and Sally's boarding house, tentatively begins a romance with Herr Schultz, a mild-mannered fruit seller who happens to be Jewish. Musical numbers include "Willkommen," "Cabaret," "Don't Tell Mama" and "Two Ladies." Sudbury Performance Group presents “Cabaret” at the Thorneloe University theatre May 4-13. Junction Creek Festival

Celebrate one of Greater Sudbury’s greatest creeks at the annual Junction Creek Festival and Trout Release event on May 13. Organizers say rain or shine, the festival will take place that Saturday from 12-3 p.m. at Twin Forks Park, at 1475 Gary Ave. in New Sudbury. “The festival is free to attend with hotdogs, ice-pops from Papaya Pops, and drinks available for purchase. There will be a variety of activities for families of all ages, including trout release, live reptiles from Science North, identifying aquatic bugs from the stream, games, and more,” organizers said. “There will also be numerous community booths to check out.”

Event includes information about the club, a smudging ceremony, dragon boat rides, tutorials, music, yoga, cardio drumming and more. The club is located at 206 Ramsey Lake Rd. Comedian Derek Edwards performance

Comedian Derek Edwards is known as one of the most popular stand-up comics in Canada. He lives in the Toronto area, but he loves getting back home into the small towns of Northern Ontario where the audiences seem to have more of an understanding of his laid back style and his ability to find humour in everyday things. Edwards is off on a 12-city Ontario tour that will see him appearing in Sudbury at the Fraser Auditorium on Saturday May 13 (Tickets available at the Sudbury Theatre Centre box office). His new 90-minute performance is called in Praise of the Ostrich, a reference to pulling his head out of the sand long enough to offer commentary on the current state of affairs.
St. Andrew’s church 50th anniversary concert

St. Andrew’s Place is hosting a concert May 13 celebrating the building of the downtown church and housing facility 50 years ago. The concert, which starts at 6:30 p.m. in the church’s sanctuary, will feature the renowned Penderecki String Quartet. Sudbury’s Bel Canto Chorus will join the Penderecki for several numbers. A presentation precedes the concert, and a reception follows. Heart of Ruth fundraiser

Heart of Ruth Mission is hosting a Spring Social and Market Fundraiser on May 13, Mother’s Day weekend. The event will feature vendors, a Mother’s Day High Tea style lunch, a large penny table, 50/50 draw, bake sale and much more. It will take place at 1520 Bancroft Ave in Sudbury between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. The entrance fee will be $2, with meals available for purchase. Heart of Ruth Mission was officially established in 2012 after a demonstrated need for help in the community of Gede, Kenya. Rainbow House Children’s Home has been the main focus and funding recipient of the organization ensuring the safety and education of the children.

City of Lakes Music Society concert

Celebrating the music of women composers, the City of Lakes Music Society is presenting “A Voice of Her Own” on Wednesday, May 17 at 7:30pm. The concert will take place at Eglise Ste. Anne-des-pins, 14 Beech St. Selections by well-known Canadian composers Elizabeth Raum and Alexina Louie are on the program, as well as music by Rebecca Clarke, a British-American composer and renowned violist whose works come from the first half of the 20 th century, and Amy Cheyney Beach, the first successful American female composer, also from the early 20 th century. The performers are well-known to Sudbury audiences: pianist Charlene Biggs, violist Jamie Arrowsmith and pianist You Young Park. Consistent with the philosophy of the City of Lakes Music Society to foster young artists, there are also two student performers: Rylan Rieder and Chloe Smilek. Tickets are available at the door. GNO presents Seed the Skin exhibit

The Galerie du Nouvel-Ontario’s latest exhibition, Seed the Skin by Fransaskois artist Laura St. Pierre, is just in time for springtime and Earth Day. The exhibition is presented from April 6 to May 20, inclusively. Admission to the GNO, which is located in the Place des Arts building, is always free. Presented in the form of an immersive installation, the exhibition Seed the Skin continues the ecological approach of artist Laura St. Pierre, highlighting the relationship we have with the environment while exposing the harmful impacts of our activities. St. Pierre will use her residency at the GNO as a laboratory to experiment with conversion of the electromagnetic vibrations of plants into music. The public will be able to "listen" to the plants! The Galerie du Nouvel-Ontario's hours of operation are Tuesday to Saturday from noon to 6 p.m.
Defeat Depression Walk

The 10th annual Defeat Depression event, hosted by the Northern Initiative for Social Action (NISA), is set to go May 27 in Bell Park. The event will begin at Grace Hartman Amphitheatre in Bell Park. Registrations will start at 9:30 a.m., with the walk/run to follow at 10:30 a.m. Defeat Depression is a national mental health awareness and fundraising initiative of the Mood Disorders Society of Canada. Sudbury Arts Council (SAC) invites submissions for its 2024 desk calendar. This year's theme is Iconic Sudbury. Included in a list of iconic images might be the Big Nickel, the Super Stack, the watertower, the Silver Bullet, the Flour Mill Silos, Capreol trains, the AY Jackson lookout, the Sudbury Wolves, historic buildings, The Bridge of Nations, Science North, the Art Gallery of Sudbury, the Grotto, recognizable sculptures and so much more. Participants may enter a maximum of two images, horizontal format only. Photographers selected for the calendar will receive an honorarium as well as five copies of the calendar. The deadline for submission is June 1, 2023. Submissions should be sent to [email protected].
Collège Notre-Dame Le Bistro student concert

On Friday, June 2, at 6:30 p.m., Le Bistro, Collège Notre-Dame’s (CND) singing café will present its end-of-the year repertoire to the public. The concert will take place in the school gymnasium located at 100 Lévis Street in Sudbury. The students are proud to be able to share their musical talent through this event. Tickets are $5 each and snacks will be available for purchase during the intermission. Le Bistro is made up of CND music students from grades 9 to 12. Tickets can be purchased at Collège Notre-Dame’s main office or at the door prior to show time. Proceeds from ticket sales will go towards CND's music program.
