Northern Lights festival AGM

Nov. 28 

Northern Lights Festival Boréal (NLFB) has announced its virtual Annual General Meeting (AGM) on Nov. 28 starting at 7 p.m. The AGM allows members, supporters, and the broader community to come together, reflect on the past year’s achievements, and look ahead to exciting plans for 2025. To participate, RSVP to [email protected] before Nov. 27. The link to the meeting will be communicated to registered participants on the morning of Nov. 28.

Speech by author Dr. Jody Carrington

Nov. 28 

The Sudbury Catholic District School Board (SCDSB) invites parents, guardians, and community partners to attend its upcoming community event Nov. 28. The event will feature a keynote address by Dr. Jody Carrington — bestselling author, psychologist, podcaster and public speaker. Renowned for her expertise in enhancing individual and organizational performance through human connection, Carrington has delivered hundreds of inspiring keynote addresses to educators, companies, and non-profits across the Country. Most recently, she was featured on the Today Show, where she shared valuable insights on fostering connection and preventing burnout. During the event with the SCDSB, Carrington will lead an engaging discussion focused on strengthening relationships within our school communities, fostering meaningful connections, and building resilience. Holiday Train

Nov. 30 

It’s a unique concert experience for a worthy cause. Greater Sudbury is once again one of the stops along the CPKC Holiday Train tour that runs through Canada and the U.S. The train stops at the train station on Elgin Street at 9:15 p.m. Nov. 30. That’s when the musicians Tyler Shaw and Shawnee Kish will perform aboard a brightly-decorated train. Each stop along the tour includes a CPKC donation to the local food bank, with organizers encouraging event-goers to make cash or non-perishable food contributions if they’re able. Since the tour’s 1999 inception, CKPC has raised $24.3 million and collected roughly 5.3 million pounds of food for food banks and organizations across North America. SSO’s Christmas Kick-Off 

Nov. 30

For a jolly start to the festive season, the SSO teams up with the Young Sudbury Singers, Bel Canto Chorus and the Sudbury Chamber Singers. Music includes The Messiah, Home Alone, The Nutcracker and a few surprises to kick off Sudbury’s most wonderful time of the year. A matinee runs at 2 p.m. and an evening performance at 7 p.m. Both concerts take place at Sudbury Secondary School’s Sheridan Auditorium. Purchase tickets online here.

Les Troubadours concert 

Nov. 30 

A tradition endures when it is truly imbued with life. This choir was formed 30 years ago, it has radiated warmth and joy, nurtured friendship in harmony and wholeheartedly shared the vivid emotions conveyed by choral music. For these invigorating voices of our community, La Slague will provide a rehearsal space and will produce this year’s Christmas event. Director Jean O’Hanley is preparing a concert that embodies both the holiday spirit and a beautiful Sudbury tradition. The concert takes place Nov. 30 at 7 p.m. at Place des Arts. Nickel City Sound concert “Snowed Inn”

Dec. 1 

Nickel City Sound Sudbury’s Women’s Barbershop Chorus presents Snowed Inn Dec. 1, a celebration of song in four part harmonies.  Under the direction of Jennifer Huss, Nickel City Sound chorus will fill the air with your favourite holiday tunes along with some timeless classics. Guest performances by Sudbury Secondary School’s Star Fire Choir and Brass Quintet will add to the festivities. The concert will take place on Sunday, Dec. 1 at 2 p.m. at Sudbury Secondary School’s Sheridan Auditorium. Admission for this show will be $20 for adults and $10 for youth 17 and under. Tickets may be purchased at Sudbury Secondary School, Jett Landry, at www.nickelcitysound.ca or from any chorus member. A limited number of tickets will be sold at the door. Donations to the food bank are greatly appreciated by the group.

Mayor’s tree-lighting

Dec. 6

Now that there’s a bit of snow, the conditions are right for the annual Tom Davies Square tree-lighting ceremony. The event is happening Dec. 6. Mayor Paul Lefebvre and city councillors will be on hand to flip on the lights in the Tom Davies Square courtyard. The evening begins at 6 p.m. There will be musical performances by the Young Sudbury Singers and the Young Thunderbird Singers, and free hot chocolate and treats. Free rides for those taking part will be available on GOVA Transit. Simply let the bus operator know you'll be attending the ceremony. The tree will be lit from Dec. 6 until the week after Orthodox Christmas. The “Merry and Bright tree” is an artificial spruce standing around eight metres (26 feet) and 3.5 metres (12 feet) in diameter, the city said in a news release. It is lit with 1,325 high-efficiency warm white LED bulbs, using 80 per cent less energy than incandescent bulbs.

City of Lakes Music Society presents “Deck the Halls”

Dec. 7 

The City of Lakes Music Society is presenting Deck the Halls as part of its Keys to the Library Series on Saturday, Dec. 7 at noon at the Main Public Library. Featured are the Northern Brass Quartet, the Sudbury Chamber Singers under the direction of Susan Urquhart, pianists Lily and Sadie Comartin, Marlena Archer and Dr. Charlene Biggs, and a carol sing-along. This concert is great entertainment for all, and especially informative to youngsters. Free to the public, although donations are welcomed.

La Slague presents La Bottine Souriante

Dec. 7 

La Bottine Souriante return to the stage with a new show to celebrate their 47-year career. We’ve been waiting for them for so long, so get ready to dance, jig and tap your feet to the tune of Jos Brûlé and hits from their latest festive, upbeat album. With a dozen musicians on stage, expect an evening you’ll long remember! The show runs at 8 p.m. Dec. 7 at Collège Boréal’s Salle Trisac. Purchase tickets online here.

Art show (Lampinen Fine Art and Custom Framing)

Dec. 7-8

Check out the Christmas art show at Lampinen Fine Art and Custom Framing. The show runs Dec. 7-8 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the art gallery, which is located at 1350 Regent St. Enjoy new work by Lampinen and friends, specials, refreshments and door prizes.

Sudbury Performance Group presents Disney Frozen Jr. 

Dec. 12-21

The enchanting modern classic from Disney is ready for your Broadway Junior stars! Frozen JR. is based on the 2018 Broadway musical, and brings Elsa, Anna, and the magical land of Arendelle to life, onstage. The show features all of the memorable songs from the animated film, with music and lyrics by Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez, plus five new songs written for the Broadway production. A story of true love and acceptance between sisters, Frozen JR. expands upon the emotional relationship and journey between Princesses Anna and Elsa. When faced with danger, the two discover their hidden potential and the powerful bond of sisterhood. With a cast of beloved characters and loaded with magic, adventure, and plenty of humor, Frozen JR. is sure to thaw even the coldest heart! La Slague presents Chuck Labelle's 2024 Christmas concert

For us, the most popular figure of the holiday season, second only to Santa Claus, is our very own Chuck Labelle. His annual concerts have been bringing joy to families across Canada for over 30 years. He is a living tradition! This year, Chuck is in lighter mode, alone on stage with his richly orchestrated soundtrack and irresistible good humour. The show runs at 6 p.m. Dec. 16 at Place des Arts. National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation screening at the Indie

Dec. 21

Northern Lights Festival Boréal (NLFB), in partnership with Sudbury Indie Cinema, invites you to a festive evening with a special screening of the holiday classic National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation. The event will take place on Saturday, Dec. 21 from 7 to 9 p.m., and is the perfect opportunity to get into the holiday spirit. In the spirit of the season, NLFB will host a donation drive for the event at Sudbury Indie Cinema to support our vulnerable community. Attendees are encouraged to bring items such as socks, hats, gloves, jackets, hand/foot warmers, emergency blankets or pre-packaged snacks. All donations will be sent to the Go-Give Project, a local organization dedicated to helping our community through a safe and stigma-free approach. YES Theatre presents Oliver!

Until Dec. 22 

The Charles Dickens classic and Tony Award Winning Musical “Oliver!” takes the stage as YES Theatre’s Holiday Show. The rags to riches story of the orphan named Oliver Twist who escapes from a workhouse and embarks on a journey through London.  Don’t miss the beloved tunes in all their glory, including "Consider Yourself" and "Food, Glorious Food," as the company explores the true meaning of home and the enduring power of hope and kindness. Nouveau Louvre 

Until Jan. 3 

For its 29th edition, the GNO is back with its long-awaited annual event: le Nouveau Louvre, a holiday art sale! For the occasion, the gallery walls will be plastered with works by your favorite local and regional artists. Shop in person at the GNO (or online at gn-o.org!) to find that rare gem. All works are sold for $225. Profits are shared between the artist and the GNO. First come, first served. 

Art Gallery of Sudbury exhibitions

Ongoing 

With the Bell Mansion closed due to structural issues, the Art Gallery of Sudbury has rented space at 172 and 174 Elgin St., on the same strip as Sudbury Custom Paint and Framing, to house its gallery shop and some exhibitions. An exhibition by zombie artist Rob Sachetto is on display on Elgin Street until Nov. 23. The gallery also runs off-site exhibitions, currently including Catherine Jaftha at Pinchman’s until Jan. 6 and Bennett Malcolmson at Laughing Buddha Jan. 13. Learn more on the gallery’s website.
