Johanna Westby is an illustrator and graphic designer from Sudbury who teaches at the School of Art and Design at Cambrian College.

People can check out her artwork at Artists on Elgin during the month of October.

Her exhibit, “Wild,” opens Oct. 5 and runs until Oct. 30. An opening reception takes place from 5-8 p.m. at Artists on Elgin.

The exhibit depicts Northern Ontario with an illustrative style that utilizes vivid colours and influences from Art Nouveau and Art Deco.

It's a selection of work that connect to each other through colour to express the familiarity of Northern Ontario. Animals and landscapes are Westby’s main focus. Westby has exhibited work at different shows and galleries, and has written and illustrated two children’s books about conservation: “The Day I Went Fishing on Lake Wanapitei” and “Fire in the Forest.”

“Colours have this strange ability to create familiarity in the unfamiliar, movement in the static and visual excitement in the otherwise mundane,” Westby said, in a press release. In my work, colour is the most important consideration, as it has the ability to breathe life into a piece,” says Westby.

Artists on Elgin is located at 168 Elgin St., and is open Monday to Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
