Grab your hockey sticks, skis, mitts, toques and a parka and head to Capreol this weekend for the long-anticipated return of the Capreol Winter Carnival.

There will be lots of family friendly winter activities sweeping the community. From ball hockey tournaments to skiing, movies to music, and pancakes to porketta, the carnival will have something for everyone.

The festivities kick off at 4 p.m. tonight with the weekly Friday Fish Fry at the Royal Canadian Legion, followed by a family movie night at the Trinity United Church starting at 7 p.m. and a bonfire and comedy night featuring comedians Kris Bonaparte and Gilson Lubin from Comedy Central, Comedy Now, HBO and Spike TV’s Spike the Mic starting at 9 p.m. at the Fire House Bar and Grill.

On Saturday morning, start your day off with a Family Pancake Breakfast from 8:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the Trinity United Church, then head down the street to the Northern Ontario Railroad Museum & Heritage Centre at 59 Young St. for a Vintage Snowmobile show until 4 p.m. and Lumberjack Games and Children’s activities from 1-3 p.m.

For lunch, the Royal Canadian Legion will be hosting a chili cook-off featuring the best chilis in Capreol. The Capreol Cross Country Ski Club is hosting a barbecue and Poker Ski Run with registration starting at 10 a.m. End the night with an Ice Bar and concert featuring the Singing Soldiers at the Fire House Bar and Gill at 9 p.m.

The carnival wraps up on Sunday with a Senior’s Tea at Trinity United Church starting at 1 p.m., a 12 p.m. polar dunk at the Fire House and a Porketta Lunch at the Capreol Curling Club starting at 2 p.m. followed by an awards presentation.

Throughout the weekend there will be a ball hockey tournament at the Fire House for youth and adult teams to participate in. To register your team call Justin at 705-207-5054. The Capreol Community Action Network invites local residents and their families to get into the spirit of the carnival by creating a snow sculpture in their front yards. Prizes for the best snow sculptures will be awarded by local businesses.

Festival buttons are only $5 and can be purchased from M&R Grill, Capreol Legion, Capreol Home Hardware, Capreol Cross Country Ski Club, Foodland in Garson and Capreol, Mazucca Motors, Rocky’s and King Sportswear as well as onsite at various locations during the festival.
