‘Wizard of Oz’ show starts in Sudbury tonight

Tickets for YES Theatre-STC production have been selling well, with opening evening even selling out

Are you off to see the wizard? Because at least 1,300 Sudburians are so far.

YES Theatre is presenting “The Wizard of Oz: In Concert” at the Sudbury Theatre Centre (STC) this weekend (July 14-17) with a 20-piece orchestra and more than 20 actors, and they’re already sold out for tonight’s show.

YES Theatre and STC’s artistic and managing director Alessandro Costantini said in an interview this week that more than 1,300 seats have been sold for the performances.

This is YES Theatre’s first concert series ever since announcing their partnership with the STC and the cast is feeling pumped to put out a show after hours of rehearsals and preparations.

“It's been so wonderful to launch this new vision with this specific piece of theatre, Wizard of Oz, in concert because it's a piece that so many people have a relationship with already,” Costantini said.

“So in many ways, it feels quite serendipitous that is happening now under this collaboration. It's also glorious to have so many people in the building again. We have a team of musicians, we have a cast of over 20 actors, crew and our technicians. There's day camps happening right now with young people in musical theater and acting camps, so it just feels really wonderful. There's a lot of vitality in theatre again.”

Constantini himself will be playing the role of the scarecrow in the concert this weekend, a role he has a particular liking to because of what it symbolizes in the play.

“What I love most about it (the scarecrow) is the kind of friendship that the scarecrow and Dorothy and the tinman and the lion establish. So this really is a story of four friends who kind of accept each other and love each other,” Costantini said.

The show is a music focused take on the classic tale of the Wizard of Oz and will be featured throughout the entire weekend starting from Thursday July 14 to Sunday July 17 at the STC, 170 Shaughnessy Street.

Tickets range in price from $32 for students to $50 for adults. They can be purchased here or by visiting the STC box office. Tickets will also be sold at the door.

Unfortunately, tonight’s show sold out but there are a few slots remaining for Friday’s show at 7 p.m.

Saturday and Sunday have two show slots, for 1 p.m. and 7 p.m.
