The YES Theatre team recently celebrated the ceremonial groundbreaking on its Refettorio outdoor theatre space in downtown Sudbury.
“With plans to open next summer, this marks quite a revolutionary theatrical milestone in the city,” said a press release from the theatre company.
“As exemplified by the recent opening of the Place des Arts, bolstered programming at the Sudbury Theatre Centre, a renewed focus on new work with Pat the Dog and more, professional theatre in Sudbury is undergoing a renaissance.”
The press release said YES hopes that the Refettorio will provide a place for all sorts of artists to share their work, and to experience a coming together in the heart of downtown.
It can also be a place where the community can find respite from their daily lives, understand new things about themselves and the world and have an experience that brings everyone closer to the heart of life, the theatre company said.
“YES Theatre has always been rooted in the idea that our access to community influences our quality of life,” said YES Theatre founder Alessandro Costantini.
“The Ref began as a response to the current global pandemic. There were moments early on when it felt like the theatre would never live again, that our stages would remain dark forever. We began to think of ways we could bring our community together. This space will be a communal dining hall for the heart and mind; a place to edify, inspire, and bring people together.”
The press release said the YES Theatre Refettorio will be an “artistic Neverland” right in the downtown core. It’s a dream come true for the team who raised more than $2.5 million over the last year and a half.
As the build begins, YES looks forward to announcing summer programming at their upcoming season launch.
