From July 1-Aug 31, all YMCA locations across Northeastern Ontario will be offering free membership to teens ages 13-17.
This decision was based on the 2018 ParticipACTION Report Card on Physical Activity for Children and Youth, which showed that only 35 per cent of 5-17-year-olds are reaching the recommended physical activity levels outlined in the Canadian 24-hour Movement Guidelines for Children and Youth.
According to a press release, it was important for the YMCA to introduce this program, as evidence indicates physical activity in childhood is essential for a healthy brain and leads to improved thinking, learning, attention, stress management, coping strategies and more.
Teens must be accompanied by a parent or guardian and bring a valid piece of photo ID with them to register. Full details can be found here.
