Beginner and experienced yogis alike will come together for Sudbury’s second annual Yogathon for Mental Health on Sunday, April 2.

The event will once again be held in the Upper Hall of the Caruso Club from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. This Yogathon is designed to be gentle, enjoyable, and accessible for a range of experience levels and abilities.

The Yogathon’s lead organizer, Emily Zanini, welcomes the Sudbury community to register for this event which will offer people the opportunity to increase their mindfulness about how yoga can relate to their self-care and wellness practices, as well as offering greater mental health awareness and destigmatizing the experiences affecting many across the Sudbury community.

“By dedicating a day to wellness in yourself and to others who are affected by mental health challenges and mental illness in our community,” said Zanini in a news release.

"You are standing up against the stigma and being proactive in sparking change in Sudbury”.

The Sudbury Yogathon for Mental Health is also a fundraiser and all of the proceeds will be going to NISA/Northern Initiative for Social Action, a non-profit peer-run mental health organization providing recovery-oriented services to people with lived experience of mental illness.

“I was so blown away by the energy in the building last year and all of the positivity that came from the event,” Zanini said.

“With the help of our community partners and participants, over $9,000 was raised for NISA (Northern Initiative for Social Action). This initiative hits close to home for many of us and the response from the community has been overwhelming. It really shows the need for these types of initiatives in the North. It’s important for those who are suffering to realize that medication is not always enough. Peer support is such a vital part of recovery that is often not considered.”

More than 15 qualified, local instructors will guide participants throughout the day in grounding meditation, intro to poses and flows, strength-building, balancing, grounding, core strength and restorative yoga sessions, with modifications demonstrated for each style.

To increase the community-building aspect of the Yogathon, 20 local exhibitors will also be at the Yogathon, sharing and selling their products and information.

The exhibit itself will be free to all to attend so even if you’re not interested in yoga, the exhibit will have something for everyone, with a wide variety of local, nutritional health and wellness-based products.
