Glencore Sudbury Integrated Nickel Operations (INO) is the latest mining company to assist the local community in recovery efforts from COVID-19.
The Sudbury-based nickel miner has donated $40,000 to the United Way Centraide North East Ontario through its Local Love in a Global Crisis Community Response Fund.
It’s designed to provide emergency funds to local charitable organizations working to meet the basic needs of people disproportionately impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.
“Many of the emergency grants that have been distributed to date have supported essential needs, including several food-based initiatives, personal care products, cleansers and PPE (personal protective equipment),” said Mary Lou Hussak, the organization’s executive director, in a June 22 news release.
“We are thankful to our corporate partners and donors for making this work possible now and in the coming months, as needs evolve.”
The donation from Glencore Sudbury INO brings the fund’s total to more than $300,000.
In May, nickel miner Vale Canada, which also has operations in Sudbury, and Wheaton Precious Metals, one of the world's largest precious metals streaming companies, teamed up to donate $200,000 to the fund.
Glencore Sudbury INO has been a long-time supporter of the United Way. Earlier this year, the company contributed more than $360,000 through the company’s annual fundraising campaign, and employees donated their time as volunteers.
“Through years of involvement and partnership with United Way, I witnessed the dedication and hard work of the team,” said Doug Conroy, Glencore Sudbury INO’s human resources manager and a United Way board member, in the release.
“There is no doubt that the expertise of the staff at the United Way can ensure that the funding is distributed directly to the areas most in need.”
Glencore Kidd Operations has also supported the United Way’s efforts in Timmins, announcing in April an investment of $50,000 to support COVID-19 relief efforts in that community.
In April, Glencore announced a $25-million Community Support Fund that's designed to support communities around the globe in which it operates.
