One lucky local charity is about to be at least $10,000 better off, thanks to 100 or more generous Sudburians.
On May 15, crowds are invited to take part in the 100+ Strong campaign to help a local cause.
Already, 100 people have committed to attend, but others are welcome to join the unique fundraiser too. The crowd will gather at Council Chambers at Tom Davies Square, where everyone participating will have the opportunity to write down the name of their charity of choice.
Once the event begins, three charities will be chosen at random, and the person who supported it will be invited to tell the crowd a bit more about it. Once the audience has heard the merits of each organization, they will be asked to vote for whichever organization they feel is most deserving. Afterwards, everyone will sign a cheque for $100 to the cause with the most votes.
“Everyone's catching the fever,” said Anna Maria Barsanti.
The Sudburian read about the fundraiser in a book called Miracle: 50 Lessons for Making the Impossible Possibly by Regina Brett. Once she learned about the endeavour, she decided to give it a go.
Within weeks, she had reached her goal of 100 people.
“The room will be filled with a group of amazing people,” she said. “Some you know, some you know of, and some (who) have just entered a new circle of influence.
"I can state unequivocally that this group of 100-plus was the result of many wonderful people reaching into their respective networks of friends, family and colleagues to bring everyone together for a common cause.”
After all the donations have been collected, the person who nominated the winning charity will have the opportunity to present them with the prize.
Marie Whitehead was invited to participate by her friend Bela Ravi.
“It seemed like a worthwhile cause to join,” she said. “I wanted to be part of an unique, first-time experience.”
Barsanti said she'd like to make the 100+ Strong campaign happen twice a year — once in May and once in November.
At every event, Barsanti said she'd like the previous recipient's nominator to give the rest of the crowd with an update on how the funds were spent.
Anyone and everyone is welcome to participate in the event — a one of a kind opportunity to be part of a $10,000 donation in about an hour.
To get involved, simply arrive at Council Chambers at 6:30 p.m., to register before the event begins at 7. For those who'd like to participate, but are unable to physically attend, they are welcome to drop off a cheque at the Information Desk at Greater Sudbury Police Service's office on Brady Street.
All cheques can be left in an envelope addressed to Anna Maria Barsanti, NPU - 2nd Floor.
In order to be eligible, charities must be local, or have a local chapter, and be able to issue tax receipts.
