A haircut that raised more than $26K

Sudbury woman shaves her head in support of Northern Ontario Families of Children With Cancer

Larah Bigras loved her long, brown hair.

But today, Bigras is sporting a shaved head, and she couldn't be happier. That's because her fundraising campaign in support of  Northern Ontario Families of Children With Cancer exceeded her already ambitious goal of $25,000, raising more than $26,000.

"In combination with all the events and the cash donations from friends and family, I'm proud of all the money we were able to raise," Bigras told the crowd Saturday afternoon at the New Sudbury Centre.

"This is a big deal. Off the top, I'm shaving off more than 22 inches of hair, I'm donating it to wigs for kids. It's a very personal thing, right? Our hair, as women, that's our femininity."

Everyone has been touched by cancer, she said. Most recently, her mother was recently diagnosed with breast cancer, but is now in remission.

Bigras works for Shaw Direct Satellite TV. Through her work, Bigras approached the NOFCC to see how the two organizations could work together. After that meeting, she said she was blown away by the amount of work done by a small staff.

"I want to give it all away because I believe in the cause,” she said Saturday. “I believe in helping children, I believe in helping these families. Those families are our neighbours. They're our friends and family."

The event was hosted by Cliff Skelliter and Vic Theriault, who entertained the crowd while Bigras surrendered her locks. A hairdresser first cut Bigras hair into eight ponytails, which were sliced off by different supporters and donors. She broadcast the entire event live on Facebook, prompting a few more donations online.
