After recent fundraising events, the local chapter of Cystic Fibrosis Canada has announced it has raised $32,000, more than double its fundraising goal.

Money raised in Sudbury will go toward world-class research to develop new treatments and find a cure, as well, to advocate and support high-quality individualized CF care.

More than 200 people participated in the Walk to Make Cystic Fibrosis History May 28 at Kivi Park and raised $25,000, more than double its initial target.

Students at St. Benedict’s Secondary School also held their own walk in support of Cystic Fibrosis Canada on June 1, raising $3,500 through a charity breakfast, BBQ and shaving and cutting the hair of a few brave school staff members. A few more brave staff members agreed to get a pie in the face.

Kivi Park founder Lily Fielding pledged to match every dollar raised at the high school, contributing another $3,500.

“This was a record year for us,” said Sudbury chapter president Chantal Filion, in a press release.

“We have met and exceed our goal thanks to those who participated in the walk, students at St. Benedict’s Catholic Secondary School who continue to support CF and the generous contribution of Mrs. Fielding.”

In Canada, it is estimated that one in every 3,600 children born has CF, a disease that has various effects on the body, but mainly on the digestive system and lungs. Currently, there is no cure.

The Sudbury Cystic Fibrosis clinic in NEO Kids at Health Sciences North is the only CF clinic in Northern Ontario, attracting patients from as far as Timmins, Sault Ste Marie, Temiskaming and Parry Sound.

According to the Canadian Cystic Fibrosis Registry, there are 30 children and 43 adults that attend the clinic in Sudbury.
