One of Canada’s foremost church musicians and organists will be awarded an Honorary Doctorate in Sacred Theology on Oct. 5 during Thorneloe University's annual convocation.

Matthew Larkin is receiving the honour for his significant contribution to Canadian church music.

A Fellow of the Royal Canadian College of Organists, Larkin served as the organist and music director at Christ Church Cathedral (Anglican) in Ottawa from 2003 until this past summer when he took his new responsibilities, again as organist and music director, at St. Thomas’s Anglican Church in Toronto.

Carol Stos, a retired Laurentian University professor in the modern languages and literatures department, will also be inducted into the Fellowship of Thorneloe University during the event.

Stos developed a close relationship with Thorneloe University, particularly in her work with the Legal Education and Action Fund (LEAF).

She has also been a long-time friend and supporter of Thorneloe University’s academic programs over the years.

Roslyn and Glenn Crichton will be awarded the Thorneloe Mitre for their work in bereavement support. From Cambridge, Ont., the Crichtons founded and continue to operate the COPING Centre (Caring for Other People in Grief) as a place for broken hearts to come together, share their grief experiences, and find comfort and hope.

With over 25 years of service, the COPING Centre has served thousands of individuals, with specific programs tailored to children, teens, young adults, adults, and those who have lost a loved one to suicide.

The public is invited to attend Thorneloe's convocation, which takes place Oct. 5 at 7:30 p.m. at the Church of the Epiphany.

Larkin will also perform a benefit organ concert Oct. 6 at 7:30 p.m. at St. Andrew’s Place.

The public is invited to attend this free concert. Donations will be accepted in support the Organ Fund for the Fielding Memorial Chapel of St. Mark at Thorneloe University.
