Aquatic centre upgrades at YMCA will keep it afloat for years to come

Trillium grant helps pay for $176K project

Upgrades to the YMCA's aquatic centre to the tune of $176,000 wouldn't have been possible without a grant from the Ontario Trillium Foundation, said the general manager of Health, Fitness and Aquatics.

Kendra MacIsaac said the four-week project is now complete. A ceremony was held on July 21 to officially reopen the aquatic centre.

A grant from the Ontario Trillium Foundation in the amount of $88,000 helped pay for those upgrades, which included a new liner for the pool, new tiles, a new sub floor and upgrades to the filtration system, among other things.

“The YMCA is so grateful for the Ontario Trillium Foundation grant investment,” said Kim Kanmacher, president and CEO of the YMCA of Northeastern Ontario.

“This investment allows the YMCA to offer quality aquatics, lifesaving and learn to swim programming to all individuals in the community, including children, teens and adults who face accessibility barriers and those who would not otherwise have the financial means to participate in such activities to keep them healthy.”

In Northern Ontario, about 50,000 people utilize the services of the YMCA on an annual basis. The upgrades will position the YMCA for years to come.

“It is with investments like these that your Ontario government continues to build a healthier community, ”said Sudbury MPP Glenn Thibeault.

“The YMCA is integral to the city of Greater Sudbury. It brings our people together, it provides guidance to a healthy lifestyle and it nurtures future community leaders. The YMCA provides services for every member of our community at every stage of life and your Ontario Government is proud to support the efforts of the YMCA as they work to build a stronger and healthier Sudbury.”
