Bancroft business gets a makeover

Community mural completed at Sue's Bancroft Confectionary

Greater Sudbury Police unveiled a brand new community mural on at Sue's Bancroft Confectionary on Bancroft Drive on Oct. 14.

In November of 2016, the Greater Sudbury Police Service launched a graffiti deterrence initiative spearheaded by acting Sgt. Jason Gagne in cooperation with the owners of Sue’s Bancroft Confectionary.

The local business had been the target of graffiti tagging on several occasions.

Acting Sgt. Gagne partnered with Myths and Mirrors to have a mural painted with the hopes of reducing the possibility of graffiti crimes reoccurring at this location. It was also decided that this would be a great opportunity to engage community members and build a sense of community pride around the completion of the mural.

Gagne raised more than $2,200 through contributions from the Sgt. Rick McDonald Committee, Second Avenue Home Hardware, CrimeStoppers, and Wolves United.

"A special thank you also goes out to Councillor Lynne Reynolds and Sherri Moroso for their ongoing support of this initiative," said a GSPS news release.

On Friday, Sept. 15, the painting of the Bancroft Drive community mural began with a great turnout and tremendous support from the community.

The painting of the mural took place over the next two weekends, with the official unveiling of the mural happening this past Saturday, Oct. 14.

"The Greater Sudbury Police Service would like to thank all of our community partners and community members who not only donated money and supplies, but who showed their support for this initiative, as well as, their ongoing commitment to our community’s safety and well-being," said the news release.

"We are dedicated to proactively seeking new ways to minimize crime and engage our community as part of Our Shared Commitment."
