Beat the winter blues with these tips from the CMHA

It may feel as though Sudbury has been mired in the midst of a harsh winter forever, but the truth is that we aren't even a month removed from the official start of winter on Dec. 21.

This is the time of year when some Ontarians may notice a shift in mood and energy. Research suggests that 15 per cent of the general population experience the winter blues, which can include changes in appetite and lethargy as the days grow shorter.

CMHA Sudbury/Manitoulin will be providing brief services to individuals who are looking to talk to someone. The branch’s intake team is also happy to refer individuals to community resources, as needed. 

“It’s essential that people take care of their mental health at this time of year,” said Emily Zanini of CMHA Sudbury/Manitoulin. “A few small changes can go a long way to help individuals cope with a dreary winter.”

The winter blues differs from Seasonal Affective Disorder, or SAD, which affects about two per cent of the population and is a serious form of depression. Symptoms of SAD include weight gain, decreased energy and fatigue.

People experiencing the winter blues can benefit from:

  • Maximizing exposure to sunlight. Spend more time outdoors during the day and arrange indoor environments to receive maximum sunlight. Keep curtains open during the day, and move furniture to sit near a window. Adding lamps can also help.
  • Exercise. Exercise relieves stress, builds energy and increases mental and physical well-being. Make a habit of taking a daily noon-hour walk. The activity and increased exposure to natural light can raise spirits.
  • Eating well. Healthy eating has been shown to benefit mental as well as physical health. Be sure to incorporate fruits and vegetables in daily eating habits.
