While Sudburians will once again have to celebrate blueberry season without the traditional festival, this year the organizers are hoping you’ll share stories and recipes for the local favourite berry of blue.
Last year the festival was cancelled, of course, due to the pandemic. However, organizers found a way to celebrate the season by hosting the Blue is Beautiful contest, asking for submissions of blue paintings, crafts, music, short stories and poetry. There were so many excellent submissions, said the judges, that each participant received an award. You can see the winners by clicking here.
This year, the Blueberry Festival has two new COVID-related themes. It’s a chance to celebrate the wave of cooking that has taken over with many stuck at home or unable to eat in restaurants, as well as an opportunity to share stories of the past year.
For 2021, the Blueberry Festival will feature Covid Cuisine (recipes) and Covid Chronicles (stories). Organizers said the event will give the opportunity to submit made-at-home recipes - either new creations or old favourites - and the recipes do not have to be blueberry-themed. It’s more about discovering how creative Sudburians have been during this trying time.
There is also the storytelling element, which the organizers of the Blueberry Festival hope will form an historical record for post pandemic remembrances and reflections, both positive and negative. The stories will be posted on their website.
For some contributors there will be Blueberry Heritage cookbooks and hand-painted blueberry wine glasses. This event is now underway with submissions accepted up until September 15, with lucky contributors announced thereafter.
