'Breathtaking': Sudburians share their memories of Notre Dame cathedral (Photos)

France vows to rebuild after fire devastates the nearly 700-year-old medieval church

The fire at Notre Dame cathedral is out. Now, the monumental task of rebuilding the iconic Catholic church begins.

France has vowed to rebuild the medieval cathedral, and donations are already pouring in. LVMH Group, which owns Louis Vuitton and other high-end fashion brands, has pledged €200 million (US$226 million) to the effort, while The Pinault family, which owns luxury conglomerate Kering, pledged €100 million (US$113 million).

With pledges from other major French corporations, the rebuilding fund has already topped US$450 million.

Sudburians, too, expressed shock and regret at the fire.

From our Facebook page:

Kent MacNeill Visited with two friends in 1993. Beautiful place with so much history.

Karleen Haché I was there in 2005 and it took my breath away. I am in no way religious but the architecture and history of the cathedral is so amazing.

Kayla Lapointe I was going to check that off my bucket list in October

Melinda Hanvey I've been several times, I am so sad to see this building destroyed

Genevieve Dupont What an unfortunate disaster! We were there in September 2018 but didn’t go inside. HUGE regret.
