Increase film productions promises increased economic impacts

If you see Durham street transformed into a New York Street with the iconic yellow cab, chances are it is one of the many production underway in Greater Sudbury.

The City of Greater Sudbury has provided an update on the films in production around the city this summer. One production, a television series for a "popular online streaming service" (neither of which the city named) is a $15-million spend in the Nickel City.

Along with having positive economic impacts for the community, this flurry of film-production activities will aid in expanding the city’s reputation as the filming hub of Northern Ontario, with indications of more business coming in future, the city said.

The productions mean jobs for the city’s growing film service industry, such as trained crew, equipment rentals, set design, carpentry and other home-grown expertise.

The benefits of the filming will also be shared by local businesses, including hotels, restaurants, and retailers.

A 2017 report released by the Greater Sudbury Development Corporation outlines the activity in film sector in 2016 and 2017 has included 38 different film, television and web series productions with a total spending of $39.1 million in Greater Sudbury alone.

Current film project "Amélie et Compagnie," a children’s, a television series produced in Greater Sudbury by Carte Blanche films and broadcast on television and online on TFO, alone has resulted in direct spending in the community of more than $4 million over the past three years.
