Cyberspace is vital to maintaining the world today.

To meet those demands, Cambrian College is planning on launching a new cyber security program for January of 2022.

The program comes at an important time — especially with the COVID-19 pandemic and the vital role that computers play.

“The COVID-19 global pandemic has made it very clear how much we all rely on computers and digital technology, in our schools, workplaces, communities and homes,” said Paula Gouveia, vice-president academic at Cambrian College, in a press release. “Now more than ever, the world needs highly skilled experts in cybersecurity.”

The two-semester graduate certificate program will allow students to learn how to protect computers, applications and networks from unauthorized sources.

Students will also learn key aspects of cybersecurity like infrastructure configuration, information systems security, risk management and policy, and ethics and law.

The program is offered to both full-time and part-time students. Part-time students have the option of completing the program by “choosing a pathway” - which offers students to choose from a variety of course load schedules to finish their degree.

Some employment opportunities in this field can range from information systems security analysts to network technicians and consultants. Graduates will be equipped to mitigate security risks and safeguard information in public or private sectors.

“At Cambrian, we’re constantly working with industry to identify the skills that are needed now and in the future, and this new program reflects that,” adds Jill Ferguson, Chair of the School of Information Technology. “Graduates of our Cybersecurity program will be using their skills to detect and eliminate threats in the exciting field of digital security.”
