The Greater Sudbury Community Development Corporation voted in favour of a $33,000 investment over two years towards an alternative energy systems facility on campus at Cambrian College.

Project leader and dean of the school of computer and engineering technology John Hood hopes to have the new facility up and running for the 2006 school year in order to accommodate a new three-year energy systems technology program.

The facility and academic program will focus on energy conservation and will generate new energy efficient technology for small buildings, such as windows and doors although Hood isn't setting limits on the project's potential.

?We all see what's happening with energy and with energy costs, so somewherealong the line we're going to have come up with alternative energy systems,? said Hood.

?What this will do is provide an opportunity for entrepreneurs and small businesses to develop alternative energy systems and the students will do the monitoring and the analysis of the systems.?

To date, Hood has secured about one third of the estimated $1 million required to complete the facility.
