Cambrian College has confirmed that 23 members of the college’s “family” have self-disclosed that they have tested positive for COVID-19.

An email about the situation was sent out to staff and students beginning late Monday night, and the information was posted on Cambrian’s website Tuesday morning.

The college said Public Health Sudbury & Districts has confirmed there is no evidence of transmission (spread) on campus and there is no outbreak at Cambrian. Transmission occurred in the community, not on campus.

“We continue to support them in their recovery, while adhering to PHSD guidelines and the need to uphold the confidentially of all involved,” said Cambrian president Bill Best, in the message posted to the college’s website.

Best pointed to a recent media interview with local medical officer of health Dr. Penny Sutcliffe, who said some of the new cases in Greater Sudbury are as the result of close contact through living arrangements or affiliations of small social circles, and not through a large social gathering or super-spreader event.

Campus remains open, and this decision is based on Public Health’s assessment that there is no evidence of COVID being spread on campus and there is no outbreak on campus, said the college.

Public Health Sudbury has also advised the college that there are no further public health measures it needs to take at this time, over and above what it already does as part of our COVID response plan.

Out of what it calls “an abundance of caution,” the college cancelled three classes and conducted deep cleaning of affected areas.
