Sylvia Barnard will succeed Frank Marsh, who died last fall. She is the first woman president in the 35-year history of Cambrian College.

Â?You donÂ?t replace a president thatÂ?s gone,Â? said Murray Scott, chair of Cambrian's board of governors, Â?but you look for similar attributes in a candidate.Â?

It was a seven-month search for those attributes, and the search for a president spanned all across Canada.

Barnard is currently the vice-president, academic at Georgian College in Barrie. She will officially assume her duties as president of Cambrian Aug. 6.

Under her leadership, we are confident that Cambrian will be well-positioned to continue to provide education at its best,Â? said Scott.

Barnard holds a bachelor of arts, with a major in French and German from Wilfred Laurier University; she bachelor of education from the Ontario Teacher Education College, and a master of education, educational administration, from the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education at the University of Toronto.

BarnardÂ?s 25 years of experience in education has included classroom and administrative experience.

She has experience working as a teacher and principal at the elementary school level. Barnard was the superintendent of schools for the Simcoe County District School Board. She has been at Georgian College for two years.

BarnardÂ?s personal involvement in the community includes a volunteer organizer with Youth Assisting Youth, a community youth mentor program, a member of the Canadian Owners and PilotsÂ? Association, and a volunteer instructor in the Young Eagles program.

Barnard has a connection to the north because she grew up in Manitouwadge and has family in Sudbury.

Â?She didnÂ?t apply at any of the other colleges that were looking for presidents,Â? Scott said. Â?This is the college she wanted.
