Cambrian students bring home hardware at Skills Ontario Competition

Students earn two gold, one silver and one bronze at Toronto event

Six Cambrian College students have demonstrated they are among the best in their respective fields — earning two gold, one silver and one bronze medal at the Skills Ontario Competition held in Toronto May 1-3. 

This year, 18 students represented Cambrian, and six students delivered exceptional results —  earning four medals in three of the post-secondary categories. 

The medal winners and their respective categories, are as follows: 

Scott Sirkka and William Cook (Powerline Technician) — Gold in Powerline Technician competion (team of two) 
Maxime Marineau (Electrical Engineering) — Gold in Automation and Control competition 
Brigitte Vachon (Graphic Design) — Silver in Graphic Design Studio Production competition  
Cory Fair and Mark McLelland (Powerline Technician) — Bronze in Powerline Technician competition (team of two)

Marineau will join Team Ontario and compete at the Skills Canada competition in Winnipeg, which takes place May 31 to June 3. 

Since 2005, Cambrian College students have earned 41 provincial and nine national medals in provincial and national skills competitions.

The Skills Ontario competition is the largest skilled trade and technology competition in Canada, offering students the chance to advance to national and international levels of competition. 

In addition to the competition, the event offers competitors and visitors access to the Career Exploration showcase where more than 70 businesses, colleges, apprenticeship programs, trade unions and government agencies offer information and interactive activities to help young people learn about options in the skilled trades, engineering and technology.
