The city's first potato festival — set to take place Sept. 13 — has issued a rather unusual challenge to candidates in the upcoming municipal election.

They've been invited to participate in the “Who's going to be your home fry?” potato-sack race, starting at 1 p.m.

“Get there early, bring your cameras and get ready to cheer on your favourite candidate,” said Leanne Lavoie, executive director of the Human League Association, which is organizing the festival.

The event takes place at Valley Growers farm on Martin Road from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is by voluntary donation to the Breakfast Club for Kids and PLAY programs.

Other activities include a potato pancake breakfast, a tour of the potato processing plant, a farmer's market, a petting zoo, wagon rides and a potato cannon.

Those interested in exhibiting or volunteering at the event are asked to phone 705-670-8633 or email [email protected].
