A fire that gutted a vacant single family home on Ball Park Road in Capreol is being treated as suspicious, said Greater Sudbury Fire Services.

The home had been vacant for some time before fire gutted it on July 1. The fire was called in by a Greater Sudbury Police Service staff sergeant at 11:07 p.m., said Platoon chief George Lalonde.

The home was fully involved when firefighters arrived. They were there until about 3:30 a.m. The home's roof collapsed, as did several walls, and it is considered a total loss. The home was 75-80 years old, Lalonde said.

“We thought the fire was suspicious, so the investigation has been turned over to Greater Sudbury Police Service,” Lalonde said. “We've also called the Fire Marshal's Office.”

Twenty-two firefighters helped put out the blaze.
