The Northern Ontario Railroad Museum and Heritage Centre in Capreol opened to members Tuesday, July 28, and will be open to the public Saturday, Aug. 1.

The museum will be offering guided tours by appointment only from Tuesday to Sunday until Sept. 6. Scheduled tours will begin hourly starting at 10 a.m., with the last tour of the day scheduled for 3 p.m.

Each tour will be around 90 minutes in length. Tours will be limited to four to six guests to promote physical distancing. Tours will include the Museum House, Prescott Park and the Heritage Centre. Face coverings are mandatory.

“After careful consideration of public health and government guidelines, reviewing best practices from industry associations and participating in a simulated tour, the museum board made the decision to open,” said Stu Thomas, president.

A variety of multimedia presentations and various themed activities throughout the season have been added to the guest experience.

“The pandemic provided an opportunity for the museum to improve some exhibits such as the boxcar home and to work on restoration projects such as the school on wheels and the steel caboose which are temporarily under construction” said Derek Young, operations manager.

“The museum is also launching a new website to help guests plan their visit and a new membership program to encourage shop local in the community of Capreol,” Young said.

Due to a shortened season and some COVID 19 restrictions, admission to the museum has been reduced to $14 for adults, $10 for seniors and students and $6 for children ages four to 12, including taxes.
