Almost $70,000 in emergency funding has been distributed to local charitable organizations through United Way Centraide North East Ontario/Nord-est de l’Ontario’s (UWCNEO) Local Love in a Global Crisis Community Response Fund (CRF) and The New Horizons for Seniors Program (NHSP) funded by the Government of Canada.

“The CRF was established to provide local, front-line charitable organizations with emergency funding to help meet the basic needs of individuals struggling through the COVID-19 health crisis,” says Mary Lou Hussak, executive director with UWCNEO, in a press release.

“In addition to our local fund, the Government of Canada has provided funding through their New Horizons for Seniors Program (NHSP) for projects that help improve the well-being of seniors and foster social inclusion. To date, we have been able to invest nearly $70,000 into programs and initiatives across the North East District.”

A full listing of the 29 organizations and the programs that have received funding through the

Community Response Fund or the New Horizons for Seniors Program is available at UWCNEO.com.

“UWCNEO continues to work with our elected officials at all levels of government, public health organizations, and the community at large to identify needs and coordinate funding where it is needed most,” Hussak added.

Charitable organizations that are experiencing increased demand for services to address basic needs or provide support to seniors are encouraged to apply for funding. Information, including the applications, are available at UWCNEO.com.

“Individuals seeking support or information about available programs and services are encouraged to call 2-1-1. The service is free, confidential, and available 24 hours, seven days aweek, in over 150 different languages.”

UWCNEO established the Community Response Fund to provide emergency grants to local charitable organizations working to meet the basic needs of individuals disproportionately impacted by the coronavirus (COVID-19). The Fund will be distributed through community-based organizations (Registered Charities delivering local programs).
