The mother of a six-year-old boy who was struck by a vehicle on Second Avenue Saturday afternoon says he is in stable condition at Toronto’s Hospital for Sick Children, but could require surgery on his liver.

Francine Nault said she was getting off a city bus with her three children Saturday when her middle child, Cody Thwaites, ran off onto the street where he was struck by a passing car.

Nault said she wasn’t able to reach him in time because she had gotten off the bus behind him with a stroller in hand.

She said she and her eight-year-old son were traumatized by the event and upset they couldn’t reach Cody in time.

After being transported to Health Sciences North Cody was flown to SickKids in Toronto to treat his injuries.

Nault said doctors have given him morphine, and he has around 20 stitches on his head. His liver is bleeding, which might require surgery.

“He wants to go home soon, and it just sucks that he will miss Halloween because of this,” Nault said.

While police said Cody was four years old, Nault said he is small for his age, which may have led to the confusion.
